Part of history that offers some interesting views of the battlefield. It is much shorter than I had expected but is quite symbolic. Worth a visit if youre in the area and following the auto tour route.
Very special history.
Great find to drive by anytime or visit in early morning or later in the afternoon or evening. Informative and peaceful.
Really cool to see especially at night.
This stop is set up to get out and enjoy the view. If the weather permits it, I suggest you get out and walk around and soak in the beautiful view. It is great.
Very well maintained. Came here years ago and it looks the same, which is nice to see. A worthwhile visit. So much history here.
A moving place with an excellent view.Maine granite and Alabama limestone uniting the north and the south.
Beautiful monument...just feels out of place with the design
Incredible views and profound message. We love to go here to walk and bring our dog. Have captured some amazing pictures. Definitely see this when you visit Gettysburg!
A short walk from town, this monument of Maine steel and Alabama stone is a fitting tribute to those who found themselves at Gettysburg in July 1863
Nice stop on Gettysburg tour. Great view of the valley and display of artillery
Beautiful monument
Great place to see the northern theater. It can get a little marshy in the spring so bring waterproof boots. If you follow the dirt path behind and to the right of the monument you can get a great wide angle view of Gettysburg proper and north.
Part of North Confederate Avenue, the Eternal Light Peace Memorial is something of the crowning structure of the northern side of the Gettysburg National Military Park, being bested perhaps only by the memorial marking the estimated location of the Gettysburg Address.Dedicated in 1938 by President Roosevelt, in the company of one Confederate and one Union veteran, the memorial commemorates the end of the Civil War. The structure itself, standing at 47ft, cuts a sharp silhouette against the background of the sparse battlefield: a granite and limestone monolith against the sea of green and memorial stonework.Even though the memorial provides an impressive experience in isolation from the monuments throughout the park, it is best experienced toward the end of the tour to allow the narrative of the war to build and complete with the monument of peace. One of the most impressive aspects of the memorial is the flame that burns continuously. Until 1979, the flame was gas-lit, but even with the electric-powered flame, the symbolism remains poignant. Standing at this site, the wind blowing gently in the background, the flame burning endlessly, the memorial completes its function, causing inner emotions to rise to the surface in quiet contemplation.Of all the sites at the Gettysburg National Military Park, the Eternal Light Peace Memorial is one of the most affecting, and is an unmissable experience.
Ever step taken is a lesson in history. The view of the land-breathtaking. The view of history-equally so.
I am so blessed to be able to visit the Gettysburg Pennsylvania location. So many people lost their lives and I was able to pray for them all. Thank you God for being a part of my life and allowing me to share this experience with those who have passed away. If you can visit this location please do the whole town of Gettysburg, pa is quite remarkable.
They are understaffed right now. The service was great but the food was hit and miss. Missing seasoning. No salt in the food. And I usually dont like a lot of salt but it was bland and the potatoes were lumpy. I probably wouldnt return
In memory of those who lost their lives Gettysburg or in any battle (racial, COVID, political, etc.this place helped me to recall the lyrics of Let There Be Peace:"With evry step I takeLet this be my solemn vowTo take each moment and liveEach moment in peace eternallyLet there be peace on earthAnd let it begin with me."
A Great monument with two quotes by Abraham Lincoln how we should be United as One especially from what great loss had occured on Battlefield nice views saw the flame billowing in wind read plaques took pic by cannon
A great place to experience true American history. With all the negativity in the world Gettysburg offers a solemn place for nothing but respect. If you cannot respect the history here than search yourself for any remnants of a soul. God bless American history and America herself.
We always enjoy exploring this area, often at dusk, when you can see the light better. Because the Narl Park Service did such a great job making the hill look like it did during the battle, you can see the Peace Light all the way from Benner Hill East of town (you can also see the Seminary and town from there). The light can be seen even when you travel a fee miles North of Gettysburg. I still need to figure out what the farthest South and West you can see the light from. The Peace Light is located on the right flank of the USA/the left flank of the CSA with a great approach for pictures and a small tower nearby that can also be used for decent observation of the town and almost all of Day 1s battle action. If you come to Gettysburg, this is part of Day 1 of 3 of the Battle of Gettysburg, so you must visit this spot.
A very beautiful monuments remembering the soldiers that risk there lives for there countries and cause. It very big and has other smaller monuments and cannons around it. The view is amazing and you could stay there for a while to just take in the view.
Great history here and the view is amazing.
Deeply moving. I came here feeling personally so down about current politics and to read the words on this "Peace Eternal in a Nation United" brought both tears and renewed hope.
Peaceful is correct. Low key, beautiful, serene, memorial, great for photos, and reflection. Thank you!
An incredible view and place to reflect on the events that took place in the surrounding fields.
One of many amazing monuments.
Amazing view of battlefield. All Americans should see this monument and learn the story of it.
The Eternal Light Peace Memorial is a must see and a great first stop on your first day in Gettysburg, PA.Make sure to walk the loop to visit some of Gettysburg most loved monuments like the one that features Sallie the dog. Youll also see Iversons Pits (known as one of the most haunted places in America). If you do the full loop youll be walking 1.5 miles. And if you dont know where to stay, consider staying at the Doubleday Inn. Its right on the Battlefield across the street and within walking distance of it all.
A splendid location. The monument was dedicated in 1938, and is an excellent viewpoint.
I visit Gettysburg a few times a year for various events. The most recent was a trip for Ingress, which routed me all along the Eternal Light Peace Memorial. Great weather and a park that wasn’t overly busy made it a great day.
Really nice memorial to visit. There was music playing and the view looking out at the field is amazing.
Neat history buff place to see.
This is a really pretty memorial, and the surrounding area is beautiful.
Great starting point on the auto tour. Get out and walk around to read all the signs to give you a good idea of where everyone was on the lead up through the end of the first day of fighting
Fantastic view of the entire area. Clean well cared for area. Incredible part of local history.
Not just a history tour stop it is also a lovely place to visit and find peace by taking in the beautiful view
An important place for Americans to visit to honor those who lost their lives when flight 93 went down on 9/11 in Pennsylvania.
A beautiful memorial to those who lost their lives during one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. A perfect site for honor and reflection set atop a knoll in the midst of the area of the first day of battle at Gettysburg.
Very well maintained area - it was very enjoyable to be able to take in history. Great location for photos.
One of my favorite stops at Gettysburg especially if you have little ones that need to get out and run around.
Another first rate monument at Gettysburg. Quite a large one, and possibly too big, but I understand the intent. I think a smaller monument that included the eternal flame would have been more appropriate for the context. Still, a moving tribute on the last reunion of CW veterans.
Beautiful place to go when you are walking around Gettysburg. Free to walk around and gives you more time to look at everything. Every spot tells you a story about the war in Gettysburg. You can pay for tours which is expensive and they dont stop at every spot.
Very beautiful memorial very clean with cannons and lots of history to learn even some pathways to walk on. This memorial is even more beautiful when the sun sets allowing you to clearly see the flame thats eternally burning at the top.
Really cool monument. Thats about all there is to say.
Beautiful place! Went on a bus tour, this was one of three stops. Learned a lot. Gave me chills knowing what happened here.
This is a humbling place. The eternal flame has been burning since its dedication by President Franklin Roosevelt on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863).
On a tour around Gettysburg and we found ourselves here at this memorial for a while. It is not wheelchair friendly to get up to the top platform, but with some assistance you can get pushed through the grass to get up there.
We made sure to stop here after we took a walking tour with a park ranger. He mentioned to us that JFK was invited to give a speech at Gettysburg marking the 100 year anniversary of when Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address, but instead of choosing Gettysburg, he chose Dallas where he was assassinated. Now Kennedys grave in Arlington national cemetery also bears an eternal flame.
Another stunning location.Anytime going to Gettysburg allow yourself a few days to visit. Several for the sights and one for supporting the local stores!
