Excellent Choice in Leavenworth County

Our family moved to Kansas recently and this was one of the first restaurants we tried and we were not disappointed. The customer service is unlike anything weve experienced before, Rachel is so welcoming and kind! The catfish is delicious, fried perfectly! Grab a slice of the amazing chocolate cake too!

The fish tasted fresh, but no real seasoning... just tasted like fried fish. All in all decent experience for a quick fix. But not overly impressed.

Addicted to the fish and greens they serve. they are only open 3 days out of the week, and i eat my dinner there every day they are open.

If you like soul food cooking you better stop and get you a plate. Its, fire it dont matter what you get just look on menu and try something out every time I go to Leavenworth Ill drive by there to see if theyre open cuz they will be my excellent choice of the day if they are 😆

Best Catfish Ive ever had.

So so great! Our first time eating at Excellent Choice and we will for sure go back. Everything we ordered was amazing! Best meal in awhile and best customer service in a long while.

Food is honestly VERY bland and I grew up on soul food. No seating, its pick up and go. Owners are the nicest people Ive ever met tho!!

Came here three days in a row, don’t have a single complaint about this place, they’re friendly, and the food is great, so the name says it all, it was an “Excellent Choice”!

Iam 64 years old and was raised on southern, soul food cooking by women who had been cooking it for a very long time. As I sit here with deep fried catfish, rice and beans, fried okra and fried potatoes with onions before me all I can say is I made an "Exceptional Choice" for my meal this evening. The cornbread is the best Ive ever had. Do yourself a favor and visit this establishment. I live 70 miles away and I will be back many times.Great food ladies!!!!

Best catfish, shrimp in Our area!!! Cornbread included with every meal +1 of many sides available!! Currently open Wednesday Thursday Friday. Desserts and the best chocolate chip cookies! These ladies are dedicated and fantastic! Don’t go anywhere else there’s no point!

Id like to preface this by saying that we dont make it to town very often, even less often when Excellent Choice is open. We made a rather last minute decision to come visit some family this weekend and had just decided to grab something from the gas station for dinner. As we drove by Excellent Choice I saw that they were still open. I may have literally yelled at my husband to "turn around!" Long story short, Rachel & Earthell know exactly what their doing when it comes to food and it never disappoints 🙌Good prices, great portions, and amazing deserts 🤌DONT SLEEP ON EXCELLENT CHOICE!

California to Florida, Seafood Lover. Against my better judgment and love of seafood...I land in Kansas. I could live on Seafood. Kansas is all about BEEF, good Beef mostly...tastes nothing like fish. Then I discovered a gem of a place called Excellent Choice. OH MY, was it ever. Run by Rachel, my British friend and her mother-in-law. They are both graduates of Culinary Institutes and their menu fare is nothing less that exceptional. Rachel remembers names and orders of her customers. Beware..be afraid: she will try and persuade you into a home slice of cake. Just give in, it is well worth it. Reasonable prices, happy service. 😊

Best fish and greens and dessert in town, no contest and the absolute best service too! Rachel really loves what she and mama minnis do, and you can taste it in every single bite!I love coming here and Ive never ever had anything be incorrect or undercooked or anything, its perfect every time.

I was recommended this restaurant by a person I consider a friend. We met in a QuikTrip while doing a cooler reset. Her name was Dee. She said it was amazing and I needed to check it out. It was worth it 100%. My wife and I loved it. The food was great and the two ladies working there were extremely friendly! I appreciate yall being here serving this amazing food! The whole catfish was good. The sides were ok. Spent $46 for 2 meals.

Breaded shrimp were well done and the breading was light and crispy. Chicken wings were deep fried and very crispy and juicy. Cole slaw had raisins ands was very good the sweet from the raisins was a nice touch. However for the size $3.49 is a little on the expensive side. Thought I was supposed to get corn bread with my meal which I did not so a little disappointed there.

8 1/2 years and going strong! The ladies truly care about cooking and doing it well. This is my reward after labs at the VA. I’m doing well and the doc asked if I wanted to wait a year between visits. I replied better not take any chances and keep it at 6 months ! Haha if you can, go you will be rewarded. Catfish is so delicious! I’ve tried several items on the menu and everything I’ve had has been excellent! If you haven’t tried it, you’re missing out on some awesome food.

In the area for business and thought I would give it a try. So glad I did. Service was great and food was awesome! Felt like a real home cooked meal. Will always be a must stop if ever in the area.

I just ordered from there and came home and enjoy every bit of it.. the food was phenomenal from the fried catfish nuggets to the shrimp and chicken wings, the sides were good too 😋👍 will definitely come back to try more specialities need more places like this ..

Lovely people and the food is amazing. You have to try the catfish fillets and collard greens. Small business and extremely busy so please be patient when phone line is busy the food is worth it!

Excellent local catfish option.When are you ladies opening back up? AAFES effectively closed the food court at CGSC, and we need a lunch option other than Burger King!

I enjoyed the fish! It was really good! The yams and green beans were awesome too!Even though this was my first time eating there, I felt like they knew me!! I’ve never had a place give me hot sauce to put on my fish, and when I opened my container at home, I was like... Yes!!! They know my soul 😂. Great food!

Im not a big fan of catfish, but it is uncommon to find such a wealth of kind customer service.Cannot recommend this place highly enough.Something of note: this eatery is a small made to order operation. Please be patient and considerate with your order.

The catfish is wonderful..candied yams are awesome....mac & cheese yummy....and the sweet potato pie is fabulous! If you like sweet tea....they have the best. My husband raves about the fried okra. I love Rachel and Earthell!!❤❤❤

What a wonderful place. I have been going to Excellent Choice for many years. I am catfish crazy when I to eat. Once I get my food order I race home to enjoy the goodness of the spectacular meal. There is no better in Kansas or Missouri. Once you eat a meal from here you will be a lifetime diner.

Super friendly! Food was great! I am honestly NOT a fish person but had the catfish and was immediately smitten. Love small places like this. WILL recommend to anyone who is in the area and you wont be dissapointed.

I swore I already reviewed this wonderful place. How could I start..it is THE place to eat in Leavenworth. If you havent tried it then you are sorely missing out. Its my favorite lunch when Im up in Leavenworth, the food is amazing, the owners are amazing. Can we do 7 stars? 8? 10! Its a ten!

Hole in the wall soul food takeout. Fried catfish cooked to order (call ahead recommendedwas excellent! Sides were good, but I prefer more spice in the collard greens and red beans and rice. Good, warm, fresh cornbread. Friendly people, too! Everything fresh and cooked by a woman who knows soulfood!

Tried the catfish for the first time and it was so delicious. The meal included more food than I could eat and I ordered the small portion. Extremely friendly service from Rachel and Earthell who know how to cook. Call ahead if you are in a hurry. Cant wait to go back.

First time customer food delicious. I recommend calling in your order. If you looking for some good local soul food this is the place. I had the fish, mac&cheese, candied yams and fried cabbage. All taste good but the fish could use a little more seasoning and the yams a little more brown sugar. Other then that I would had gave a 5 star rating. P.S try the fried mushrooms very tasty....

We had the whole catfish, greens, cabbage, slaw, and hush puppies, all of which were beyond excellent! Very pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff! We will definitely be going back, to have more catfish at this hidden gem!

My husband and I decided to try it. Best. Decision. Ever. The cornbread is phenomenal. The catfish is perfectly cooked. Fried potatoes are delicious. We will definitely eat here again and again. Thank you to the ladies that work here.

Holy cow. This place is amazing. Great quality food, not greasy, lots of flavor, friendly service, everything you could want. I definitely enjoyed the jalapeno hushpuppies; new take on an old favorite.

Great southern fare. Catfish, greens okra, hush puppies, cornbread and the list goes on. Food quality is consistent. It helps to order ahead as they are usually busy.

The food here is simply superb! The menu has a wide variety of down home cookin classics, and the catfish is hands down the best in the city. The service here is personal and friendly. I will be returning time and time again!!

Try the Pecan Pie too I really can’t say enough good things about this PlaceUpdate* I keep going back and trying new items I think I might be addicted. Go here! The 2 ladies that run the places are very nice, very personable. Food was amazingI got 5 catfish fillets, collard greens, fried mushrooms and corn bread. I couldnt stop eating it. Befor I new it, it was all gone. It was worth it

Found this little gem as I was driving home from work and decided to pop in. This was hands down one of the best fried catfish meals Ive had! It was so crispy and had so much flavor! Its hard to believe that this wonderful place exists in the middle of the country, but its here and you should definitely try it. Thanks ladies!

The food is amazing! Ordered the catfish nuggets, okra, gumbo w/ cornbread, and pecan pie- everything was excellent. The service was quick and welcoming. Will certainly be back for more!

Both ladies are super friendly. The food is cooked when ordered so it takes about 20 minutes to get but thats not a problem. Food is worth it and the friendly atmosphere is a good time passer. Rachel is very good about using your name and remembering it. Definitaly my new favorite spot.

Oh my! I have now found my new favorite place. Had Catfish Strips, Fried Potatoes with onion and Fried Okra, then took a slice of the wonderful home made chocolate cake to go. Also took a large Gumbo to go and my kids loved it. I will be back soon! Thank you Rachel and the master chef!

Great food even better people working there. I have watched them talk with their customers like they were old friends. Great Cajun food that will fill you up. Fresh too place your order and then it starts cooking.

Delicious, perfectly prepared fried catfish and chicken fingers! Dishes are accompanied by savory, flavorful hushpuppies. Tasty fried mushrooms and delectable fries. Kiddo ate every bite of his mac and cheese! Our whole family was very satisfied. :)

I highly recommend this place. I almost didnt go because I dont eat catfish. My roast beef dinner and sweet potato pie was awesome. They also have an amazing story about the history of the business. Go and experience great food and 2 wonderful ladies from different cultures joined by love.

OMG...this is my favorite kinda joint! Great food, great service, friendly owners. My new favorite fish place 45 minutes from home.
