Love going there its so peaceful listening to the water
Very well kept and plenty to do while here. The shops and restaurants along with other attractions make this a great place to visit. When in season, taking the boat ride to the fort makes for a really nice day out.Bravo! The fireworks tonight were awesome
Its a cool historic place and theres a big dirt mound in there cover with trees trees and I think theres a big gun in there that they used to shoot out of a river During the wars and they have one at slaughter beach
A lot of exploring to do. Kind, interesting, informative staff. Great time for kids and adults!
Great history lesson in a beautiful location. Everything was enjoyable, the ferry, the fort, the beautiful wild flowers. Just a wonderful way to spend the day.
Went for a little fishing trip.. always come down here thinking about doing the ferry to the fort for the kids!! Walked and got info from the building.. bathrooms were clean no trash cans.. you have to carry out the trash.. staff was very friendly..
Spent the day with grandkids learning history, getting exercise, and eating box lunch we brought. A great family day. Kids enjoyed the ferry ride. The reenactors are well trained and a great asset to the experience.
Nice waterfront area with views of the Delaware River. Great place for a picnic or a walk. Click on like if you like the review or the pics.
Interesting water front area with a couple of picnic tables and a portable restroom. We walked right up on a bald eagle. Also, we were here on a nice Sunday afternoon and had the entire park to ourselves.
Pretty interesting, would be a lot cooler if you could tour on your own, and see the whole fort not just the basement hallways.
It was super cool to see all the old war stuff! The land is all very well taken care of to. The staff are really friendly and good natured.
Terrific history and out of this world paranormal tours.
This is not a typical beach where you can relax on the shore. Its just a view of inland water. There is resturant near by. Its ok for a visit once or twice. But the road from there to Newark is awesome. Its a single road looks like country side. Its a nice drive. Definitely visit the place to give a try
This was fun outdoor event! The 10 minute ferry ride to the island gave you the feeling of going on an adventure to explore a new territory! My 4 year old son enjoyed the presentations & was very engaged during the whole time. The staff was very friendly & professional. Would definitely recommend to family & friends.
The fort is very impressive. All of the employees are very nice and helpful.
Excellent players working here - fun for all ages and only a short boat ride, even if you’re easily sea sick it’s ok.
Great historical guides and demonstrations. They also have live bats.
Great place to visit if you love history, really unique place!
Our big thanks to the park stuff. It was pretty educational but not boring. Especially we liked the bat tour and the military demonstration.Precautions:- you need to buy ferry tickets in advance- parking lot location is 45 Clinton St, Delaware City- no pets allowed- no open-toes shoes- be prepared that you’ll spend there 2 hours at least
One of my favorite places to visit ❤
been going for years. Great, friendly state park people working on island! :- Luv ferry boat ride...but miss fun crew who worked on ferry boat few years ago; ferry ride not as fun now :-(
Great experience for the whole family. Its a hidden, unknown treasure. Stay for the programs...excellent and informative.
This place is awesome. So much history. Great experience
Loved Delaware City which is where this park is located. Nice paved walking path, dogs are welcomed but not on the ferry. Very clean, lots of benches & trash receptacles. Even bathrooms were tidy, but no toilet paper, so make sure you bring tour own. I could live in this town, love being right on the water.
My wife and I took the sunset cruise. Worth every penny! I had checked online a day after I bought our tickets and few were sold. I worried if we drove an hour and half, they would say it was canceled.Talked to Jake on the phone. He assured us the cruise was going, answered all my questions on parking, nearby places to eat, and best time to arrive.Cruise left on time, and 2 guys from the park office gave us tons of information without talking all the time. Both were extremely knowledgeable and didnt seem annoyed at all when other cruisers asked questions on the island, the forts, cannons, or the boat.We left at 7:30pm and docked again around 9:05pm.We are 100% going again, but will go earlier to do the tour inside the forts.Delaware City is a quaint town (not a city). Cute shops like markets, BBQ, ice cream shoppe, artist center, great waterfront dining, all with 100% free parking.
Worth a visit as the guides role play and are very interactive. The kids enjoyed learning history this way. They even fire a canon at 12:15 daily.
You have to ride a ferry over to the fort. The fort is very impressive. The reenactors are living and working in the fort as it is 1864. You can ask questions and interact with everyone.
We enjoyed this experience! It was a nice day for a boat ride and exploring the fort.
Lovely quaint historic town.
We booked tickets online but had to cancel once we arrived because on the day of the tour the weather was bad, water was choppy and it was windy and cold. We booked the first ferry at 10a.m. We arrived early and found parking by the park. There are plenty of parking slots. I did not see a meter. The office is located at the park. Bathrooms with flushing toilets available. You are allowed 2.5 hours at Fort Delaware. at the office, they have a park program. They did not have enough copies so they ask you to take a picture of it.I requested and got a refund for my ticket. I will come back in 2021. The ferry run with a few passengers
Great day out, and in beautiful weather. We had a minor issue with the ferry breaking down, but the delay was minimal, and all staff were great. The fort and surrounding park area was a beautiful and interesting place.
I went to the POW event weekend & they have a lot of civil war reenactors. One part of the fort is for only bat tours. The rest of the fort you can walk around & you can use the stairs to get on the top. You can see the bay from the top. The fort do have cannons. There is picnic tables but you will have to take the trash with you. We paid $24 for the ferry for 2 people to go to the island. The ferry ride is around 10min from & to the island.
This was an excellent overall experience. I have two teen daughters that learned a lot and enjoyed themselves. All the staff were very nice and did a great job at showing my girls history alive. Definitely will be going back.
Great old fort with teen actors. All of the reenactors are very knowledgeable and love to share their info.
Overall, great experience! Its started out a little rough when the ferry left early; however, the staff handled the situation perfectly. The ferry ride was great and definitely added to the experience. On the island, we paid $5 extra per person for the inside tour, which lasted about 2 and 1/2 hours. The guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. Also, we got to see parts of the fort that arent included in the regular admission. One important thing to note is that this is a "leave it as is" site; therefore, any trash must taken with you when you leave the island and food and drink options on the island are very limited.Highly recommended!
So far not happy. Was told by the staff after we purchased tickets at $12 each to be here at 11:20 at the ferry for it to leave at 11:30. We got here at 11:20 and the ferry was pulling away.Super cool. They told us after the fact that they combined the 11 and 11:30 ferrys but left at 11:20 and not 11:30.Now sitting here waiting for the 12 ferry.Hope it shows up.Note no food is available at the visitor center and the town only has one expensive restaurant; so bring food and water.
I went to Fort Delaware for a field trip and it was absolutely amazing! I got to see and experience how life was back then. This trip made me love history! The best part of my trip was going on the the ferry to arrive, and to head back. I hope I could go back again!
Weve lived here for 35 years. This was our first trip to this park. There are boats that take you to the prison. You need to buy tickets. There was a great ice cream place across the street.
What a wonderful place to visit! The history is captivating. One of the best features is that there is wheelchair access for the boat, tram and tour. Never have we found more convenience or welcoming for our 2 wheelchair-bound sons. Thank you!
Great place to take the kids for a day! Had fun looking for ghost, like on Ghost Hunters. Hiked the nature trail biting flies, but a good walk! Kids learned a lot about the history! Been coming here since the1970s before they had electricity in a lot of the areas! Had several scouting events here, everyone seemed to have a good time! And more of the fort was opened to public than now, but still a very good place to come back to! Hard to believe that if you live in, Delaware mainly in New Castle region, and you have not been there to the island you really need to go! And not to forget the boat ride experience! Cant wait to get back there!
Pea Patch and Fort Delaware are ripe w history. Money is tight for Fed Parks, it is preserved as much as possible. I feel they do a great job.Plan or call before a day trip. Negative reviews are folks who see open in April on a Saturday and think its parade weather.Spring, Summer is ideal for park visiting. Simply contact them first, a lot of week ends have re-enactments and time-dressed vollys. To visit off peak expecting bells and whistles is ridiculous. It is a beautiful area to boot and running a ferry(fuel, staff,INSURANCE isnt cheap to cost complainers.Plan and enjoy a really cool day trip.*Hours posted on google. Weekends
Very interesting place if you like history and weaponry. The building itself tells a lot about the American civil war and also about the first and second world wars. The staff is helpful and knows lots of historical details. They show in depth how each weapon works and what was their role in war. The ferry is also really quick and it is really easy to park around the pier.
Very nice town. Sitting & looking out at the water, taking a ride on the ferry, or just walking around is very peaceful. Their July celebration is very festive. I enjoyed my visit.
Awesome place to visit for the day. Staff and interpreters were amazing.
The fort is on the Pea Patch Island. Youll need to take a ferry. The cost of the ferry is $12 for adults, parking and entrance to the fort are free. Take with you water, bug spray, sunscreen, maybe some food (you wont be able to buy it there).About once an hour they they have great educational, very interesting programs.Overall it is a great experience! I would definitely recommend to visit the fort!
Really cool place. Definitely worth the visit. Explore the fort. Learn from.the staff. Experience the history. The ferry ride is also entertaining and there are some nice restaurants and shops in town
If you have an opportunity to spend the day at fort Delaware, I highly recommend doing it. Theres so much history here. The reenactors that are there can teach you so much. Plus the ferry ride to and from the island is very relaxing.
My experience here was both educational and entertaining. Reenactments were pleasantly accurate as well as their willingness to teach about the islands history. I love going here and will continue to do so for as long as i am in Delaware.
From the description on the parks website, I wasnt sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised to find interpretive guides in period clothing who played the parts of soldiers and laborers at the fort during the Civil War. Most of them were very good, a few were excellent. They await your arrival at various places throughout the fort. I really learned a lot about the fort and the people who made it home, during my 3 hours at the fort.
Eleven of us took the ferry to get to Fort Mott on a four-day bike trip. Our leader had called ahead and spoken with the ferry captain, who agreed to let us take four bicycles on the ferry because it would be a slow day (weekend before Memorial Day), and the rest of the bicycles had to be crammed into/onto the sag vehicle. Staff at Fort Delaware State Park didnt know about our leaders call and told us rather firmly, "No bicycles on the ferry", but acceded to the captains dominion over the ferry. Getting the four bikes on was a tight fit, and forget about tandems, trikes, or recumbents. The moral of the story is to call ahead and seek special dispensation if you need to get bikes across the river. The nearest bike crossing upriver is the Ben Franklin Bridge between Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. If you have a group, try to book a group outing on the ferry. Also, dont rely on the ferry schedule posted on the park web site -- call the park and find out what the real schedule is.
