Hero Pet Animal Hospital in Porter County

I recently took my dog, Simon, to Hero Pet Animal Hospital and I am so very pleased with the care that he received. He developed an exterior mass on his left side which was growing fast (and furious! Simon was able to undergo surgery for this quickly and is now healing well. I wish to commend the entire staff at Hero, and especially Dr. LaFollete for his expertise and compassion. For sure I will be bringing Simon to Hero for all his future needs, as well as any other critters that I bring into my household!

No way to express my appreciation to this caring vet and the staff. THEY ARE THE BEST! Our regular vet in town was unable to “squeeze” our dog into their schedule for two days; they told us about Hero Pet. (At least a thanks for that). We walked into Hero pet, and within 15 minutes we were talking to Dr. Booth. Our dog was very sick but not sure why. Blood test, x-ray; Dr. Booth suggested a short term aggressive course of treatment to see if our dog would improve. IT IS WORKING! We had expected to say goodbye to our furry child, but she is wagging her tail as always.Everything about Hero Pet is special, so glad to have it in our area.

Super kind staff, they gave my kitty a shot, and the vet tech, Hannah, was the sweetest ever. She truly cared about my cat.

Had to put down the family dog, they helped us hold on until it was time and then very peacefully they helped us put her down.. love the nurses there

The first time I took my dog I was pretty happy with the place. Decent pricing and the vet and tech/assistant were nice and my puppy was well taken care of. I was able to call ahead of time to check pricing, and the individual I spoke with told me it may be different based on what doctor recommends. TOTALLY reasonable. It did end up being a little more than originally quoted because Dr also recommended fluids and take home probiotics, but it really wasn’t much more at all and I wasn’t completely blindsided with the total cost because I was able to get some inkling of an idea of price over the phone before I came.Just called to ask the cost for a very very basic procedure and I was told they don’t have set prices for procedures, and even if they did they would not tell me over the phone which is insane. I try my best, but as a single mom with more than one pet (and one jobI need some idea of what it might cost ahead of time, even if the vet deems it unnecessary or recommends a different test. But instead they are keeping their prices a closely guarded secret and require you to drive out to Westville, wait a few hours, and pay the $55 visit fee to hopefully have enough money. If I didn’t, I would just have to do it all over again. Is it just a money grab then? To see how many visit fees they can get out of people? So I have to miss work potentially multiple times (missed wages), pay to drive to Westville multiple times (I live 40 mins away, have you seen the price of gas?), pay multiple visit fees, and the worst thing is my pet may or may not go untreated.Completely unreasonable. I was also not asking for medical advice or a diagnosis or treatment plan over the phone.I have worked in veterinary hospitals for over a decade of my working life. I have yet to see a vet that doesn’t start with a urinalysis and culture and sensitivity (if UTI is presentwith a canine presenting with issues surrounding urinating (peeing frequently, peeing when the dog is asleep, etc). Could it be something more sinister like a neurological issue or even diabetes? Sure. But the simplest answer is usually the answer, and you rule out the simple issues first. An almost 6 month old otherwise healthy puppy that is normally crate trained but starts odd peeing habits is probably a UTI. When you hear hoofbeats you think horses, not Zebras.Another reason to ask ahead of time is the wildly varying costs from vet to vet. One may charge you $100 while another charges $500 for the same service. Don’t believe me? Call around, but not Hero Pet AH.I have never had an issue asking for the prices of testing at any veterinary practice before EVER, and I have lived in multiple states.Honestly the most absurd thing I have ever heard of.

Went for the first time today. Very clean, professional, and the Dr was very knowledgeable. Staff were definitely animal lovers. Plus Buster loves that there is a McDonalds right across the street!!

We have been using this facility for our pets for months now and just love it and the staff. Recently, we had to say goodbye to a beloved family pet of 15 years and never had such a personal heartfelt experience at any other facility like this. The vets care and compassion with my family members and our pet meant everything ❤️. She made the last moments very comfortable for our dog, my daughter and grandchildren whose hearts were just broken. Thank Hero Pet Animal Hospital.

While my boy went to the rainbow bridge this morning. When I brought him in, i didnt even have time to get to the counter, i was intercepted by a member of the staff and they immediately started working on my dog. Unfortunately he was too far gone and we had to choose to hardest option so he didnt suffer, they were amazing and made me feel like they truly cared about my pup. Thank you for your understanding, patience and quick actions.

They are the very best, Ive been to a few places n no one can beat the nicest of these Heroes. They are very affordable, there to help not just take ur money. I highly recommend Hero Pet Animal Hospital

This place is great, Dr. Brooks is the best veterinarian around, she treats your animal as if they were her family, shes a very caring person.

Called for an appointment but Jodie I believe her name was seemed to be interested in something else cuz she told me they didnt take appointments just come in from 2-5 and had to keep asking her what she said so not so sure about this place if receptionist is a flight risk what are the Drs like?????

This vet clinic offered kind, attentive care to my lifelong pet as she passed. Every staff member I encountered was exceedingly helpful and courteous. Thank you, Dr. Booth!

Would recommend. Have taken 2 out of 4 cats and will be taking the others soon. Ive now seen both vets with my cats as well as 3 vet techs. They were all extremely good with my cats even when one was not thrilled to get her shots and have her ears cleaned. Ive been unable to schedule an appointment (my availability isnt greatbut their walk-in wait times have been extremely short for me. The pricing seems very fair as well and lower than other options in Porter/Laporte. You pay in the room rather than having to go back to the front and wait which saves time and simplifies things. The parking spaces are also quite large which is nice for loading and unloading carriers. It was extremely easy to get started my first time and the front desk staff were friendly and helpful. It was clean inside the lobby and waiting rooms. If you have a dog theres a little pee pad outside.

This review is long overdue. I switched vets after my dog was seen here after being hit by a car. They truly are heroes here. They know my dog by name and he literally yelps with excitement when we turn into the parking lot to come in for visits. The staff is so caring and Dr. Booth is amazing. You cannot beat the quality of care and pricing! Thank you, to all the staff for everything youve done for Maverick 💜🐕

Really appreciated Hero taking us in on short notice to care for our dog when pretty much everywhere near by wouldn’t. Everyone was caring / friendly and the little guy is on his way to recovery. Thanks for everything!!

They got us right back when we came in with our very sick animal due to our vet being closed. Amazing care and communication while our cat had an extended stay with them. They even called afterward to check on how he was doing. Definitely recommend this place, if it was closer I would move my animals regular care here.

Our 14 year old puggle was blind and very sick. We had blood tests done that had shown that she was diabetic and had liver issues. They suggested possible solutions that could be done, but at her age we didnt want to stress her anymore. We requested that she be euthanized to put her out of her misery. The entire staff was professional and compassionate. They made the entire visit easy and less stressful for us. The pricing was very fair; less than any other vet weve been to. Would highly recommend them. You wont be disappointed!

They have helped me a couple times in the last 2 weeks. Most recently one of my outside cats was injured. They allowed me to come in for an emergency appointment & we got the upmost respect and top notch care from every single employee. Although the outcome wasnt what I wanted to happen- I felt so cared for every step of the way (so did CutieI will recommend this place to everyone! Thank you everyone at Hero- me and Cutie will hold you in our hearts forever. RIP Cutie.

Very nice and helpful staff that truely care about their clients and fur babies. This clinic is Exteremly clean!! They go above and beyond for clients and patients. I love Hero pet, they truely are Heros to our babies.

Had an emergency problem with one of our cats. Called our regular vet and explained the problem and was told that they were "to busy". Drove to Hero Pet Animal Hospital ,was checked in right away and within 30 minutes was in a examination room with a Vet Assistant. After examining our cat he was taken to another room to be examined by the veterinarian. After being examined the vet came back to me with the bad news. Our cat had suffered a stroke and it was then decided that he should be euthanized. Every one was very professional and helpful in making this very emotional decision. I will recommend this Pet Hospital to everyone I can. And as far as our regular veterinarian, I will never walk through their doors again.

We appreciate the honesty and integrity of Hero Pet animal hospital. We got our female Victorian bulldog spayed and it went very well. The price was very competitive yet we feel that we got so much support

Amazing place. Took our dog here for growth removal. They were quick and thorough and even cut our dogs nails without asking. Very compassionate and priced right. Great staff!

Service & staff is really good with Oliver. Brought him in for a nail clip he was in&out 15mins. Wonderful place

We took in a momma cat and a kitten. The kitten isnt tiny, but like a smaller car. Eats on its own but still small. So, we had them about a week and a half, staying in the house for the most part and he was happy, playing and had a healthy appetite. Then the next thing we know, hes sleeping all day, barely eating or drinking and had no desire to play whatsoever. Thank God Hero Pet Animal Hospital accepts walk-ins, was open on a Saturday, wait time was minimal, staff was amazing.... price was decent and literally, our little Lucifer was slowly getting back to normal within the day. This is end of day 2 and we are in awe of his progress in such a short amount of time. His sides arent sucked in, hes up and about and eating and drinking more. Living his best life on a brand new bed WE havent even slept in yet! Such a sweet cat; his name surely does not match his demeanor. THANK YOU to ALL the staff who we encountered Saturday. You really did save his life. I recommend this place to anyone in need of a vet. Plus, plus, plus!!!

I, at first, thought they really cared. But the longer I was there the more I knew they were seeing dollar signs. We were charged almost $648 for a wound area shave, a cone, antibiotics, another shave for IV placement, and vet visit. I was told they would do surgery and come to find out the wound could not be mended. They did more than was needed to get the money. Business manager would NOT hear the double charges. So be aware they want to make you feel like you have abused your pet so they can get as much money out of you as possible. Too bad they turned out to be the same as another local pet hospital.

Very friendly workers, Im glad you take walk-in appointments my cat didnt have to suffer all weekend I wish other places did that. You guys saved me a lot of money because I would of took her to the emergency hospital. Fat cat is doing great thanks again.

Took my pup in to get a wellness check and vaccines yesterday. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. You can tell they truly care about animals there. Prices were very reasonable aswell! Cheaper than most other places.

They are wonderful! Staff very loving and caring not just toward your pet but their humans too. They took great care of our Lili and Paddee. Mahalo for all you do.

We just adopted a puppy from Guardians of The Green Mile in Valparaiso, and they were using this vet for our puppys care. The entire visit was very easy since they already had his paperwork on file. The facility is very clean, the staff are kind, and I appreciate that the doctor spent so much time with me asking questions since I am a new dog mom. I like them so much that I plan to keep my puppy with them, and Im willing to drive the 40 minutes from my home out to Westville. Highly recommended.

Always have good experiences at Hero Pet. Staff is friendly and caring. The Vets are great. They take time to listen to pet parent concerns and don’t rush . No appointments are needed so you don’t have to wait a week or two to get in.

Followed Dr. Booth and no regrets. All 4 of my pets have recently had health issues and they have taken great care of all of them. Our senior cat is terminal and they are all very compassionate. My geriatric cat needed to go for a dental to have an infected tooth removed. When we took him in it was found that he had a chest infection and we immediately got a call from Dr. Booth to put him on antibiotics and postpone the dental, which we did. He recieved his dental today and he did great. The communication from this office is phenomenal.

We followed 1 of the vets from another office. When we also found out that the other vet has 2 Great Danes that was good enough for us. We have 3 Danes so we prefer going to vets that have experience with Xlarge dog breeds. Beautiful new building, staff was very helpful and informative. Highly recommended.

Very helpful that they take walk-ins. My dog needed to be looked at because he had a sore, swollen ear. Called my vet on Monday, but they couldnt give me an appointment until 5:00 on Wednesday. They were too busy for a dog in pain.

I recently got a puppy and I was looking for vets in the area and came across this one. I’m glad I did! It’s very clean and the staff is very nice. They answer all my questions and take really good care of my baby

On my way home from work someone hit a cat and I came across it. It was not alive but I pulled over to move it’s body out of road. A man stopped and helped me. I went to several houses to see if it was their cat but no one was home. I hoped the next day someone would have found the cat and buried it. It was still there. I was near Hero Pet Hospital so I asked if they could help me get the kitty. They didn’t have staff but gave me a nice towel and gloves to bring it back and they cremated the kitty for free. I was so taken back. I was going to pay. These people are so kind hearted. I couldn’t let the kitty lay there any longer. Thanks to these people for being so amazing!!!

We recently adopted a 6mo puppy and the rescue who we got the dog from would pay for his neuter if we used Hero. They are not our normal vet that we use for our other dogs. Anyway, we have had a diarrhea issue with our other two dogs and our normal vet could never figure it out. This was happening for the last year. At least one of the dogs had an issue every month....it was incredibly frustrating. The puppy unfortunately came down with the same issue so we know it had to be something odd. Here was this new dog, on a completely different puppy food diet, that had an issue within a month of us owning him. We took him to Hero since that is the only place we had him established at. The vet at Hero did their analysis and determined that our yard (fenced in area where the dogs did their businesswas most likely contaminated with a bacteria that can cause the exact symptoms we experienced in all 3 dogs. It was the greatest relief to finally have answers. Hero is a little bit of a drive from our house but we are really thinking about transferring all dogs over to them. Everyone is friendly and I couldnt be happier about the neuter and care after.

One of our kitties needed some major care today. We were able to walk-in, be seen quickly and get a plan set in place for her care! Dr. Juhlin was very knowledgeable and ready with resources for our girl! The entire staff was kind and personable!

When our senior dog was going downhill, we went there and although it was painful visit but the accommodation was comforting. They made her last moment comfortable for her. And when we came back for our other dogs, all the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I like how spacious their waiting area. Will definitely bring our 3 dogs there for their vet visits.

I took my dog, Frankie, to Hero when our usual Vet couldn’t get him in for 3 days, but he was so uncomfortable and in a lot of pain.When we first arrived it was nice to see such an open, new, clean environment! Everyone at the front desk was very helpful and friendly.Even though we were a “walk-in” we were seen within 20 minutes! The Dr/ and the tech were so kind and gentle as Frankie was in a lot of pain. The Doctor listened to all of my concerns and answered all of my questions while explaining the entire condition in a way to easily understand.We were prescribed a couple different meds and given instructions on when to call or return.The bill was so reasonable! I was actually shocked!I left feeling reassured about my dog and glad I chose to go to Hero.Fast forward to the next morning- Frankie’s wound was not what I was expecting. Concerned, I called hero, the lady looked up our file and answered all of my questions and was even able to explain what was happening, what to watch for, and when to come back if needed.We talked for several minutes and I felt like she was truly caring of our situation and I never felt rushed or like I was bothering her.We’ve decided that we’re switching vets now. I enjoyed Hero because you can feel the compassion rather than feeling like you’re an inconvenience or wasting someone’s time.Thank you all for taking such good care of my Frankie!

I am so happy to have finally found the perfect vet for my dogs. Walk-ins welcome & open on Saturdays. I love the staff and Dr. Booth Is amazing. She knows that my dogs are my family and they are special to her too. I recently had to make a very hard decision with one of my dogs and I’m so happy that she was by my side. Thank you Dr. Booth!

This vet could get me in when I needed it on a Saturday, was reasonably priced, and great service! Everywhere else I had called did not have a veterinarian on site at the time, or was not accepting new clients, but this place was able to run my needed tests quickly with excellent customer service and staff so I could take my Madame Curie home to my other pets. If I lived closer I would definitely make them my primary veterinarian! Wonderful place to take your furry family members!

We LOVE Dr Booth and her team! We followed her from another practice because we appreciate the level of care, compassion, and knowledge that she shows. Her staff are very friendly too. I have a large breed dog. Dr Booth is great with ways to help keep her joints healthy and overall health in tip top condition. I have had other dogs with severe allergies and Dr Booth is who helped us finally get them under control. You cant go wrong with her as your pets vet!
