J. H. Hawes Elevator in Logan County
A great piece of extant Illinois history. One of the very rare, still standing wooden grain elevators in the nation. Midwest history at its best.
MoreIt has its ups and downs
Very nice display with information boards explaining what youre looking at.
Out for Route 66 day trip. Stopped by Atlanta where my father and his family grew up. Took the crew all around and gave them the low down how things were while I was growing up. Told mother I took her here before but she didnt remember. She did love it though when she started checking the place out. lol
MoreClosed when I got there but nice on the outside and lots to see within a half mile
MoreSmall museum, 95% outside. Informative plaques. Nice stop for stretching your legs.
MoreInteresting historical site. Take the time to stop.
Awesome place
Loved it. Exhilarating!
I work at a modern elevator and this was very interesting the your guide was great
MoreVery cool piece of Americana
I was a little confused on were to park. Next time i go back I would like to bring a group and take the guided tour. Some things can be viewed well without the guide opening the buildings but i want the full experience next time around.
MoreI visited on a Sunday when the elevator was open and it was fascinating to see how it worked. The structure is wonderfully restored and there was a helpful tour guide to explain it all. I had never understood how these grain elevators functioned and its really impressive to see how it was engineered given the technology of the time. Its a quick tour - we were in and out in less than half an hour - and free, donations accepted. Highly recommended for a quick stop!
