Been coming here off and on for 12 years. Always a hit and miss proposition so visits have been infrequent but just as quickly as a negative review I am also prone to offer a positive review when one has been earned. Possibly the best crabs we’ve had in a very long time on our last visit. Large heavy and tasty. The clams however were old but they all opened but were tiny dry and overpriced.Addendum; As I stated earlier this place is a hit and miss and unfortunately two misses in a row this last were sold as large but all were very small, dirty and not fresh. I usually don’t complain but this was a special occasion making a good occasion worse with a lousy order. On the flip side they did offer a replacement in a couple days which I certainly appreciate but the day I needed them was a bust. Going to have to downgrade my rating
Horrible blue crabs they claimed to have cooked fresh. The meat had a mushy consistency and my daughter is extremely nauseous after eating a small amount of meat. Called the merchant who didnt even answer the phone; its lunchtime. I left a message demanding a refund.
Every time we go there no fried shrimp fryer is always down this is not right it seems like a going problem
Extremely friendly and helpful. We picked up two lobsters and drove back to Washington DC. Lewes Fishhouse, packed the lobsters with ice and in containers as we did not bring a cooler. Great place!!
When ordering two pounds of steamed shrimp, is there an expectation to get at least one tiny container of cocktail sauce? Well you’re not getting any at this place. NOT included. Two pounds of large streamed shrimp was $25 but no cocktails sauce included. Kinda ridiculous in my book. Time to move on to another seafood house.
Wish I could rate this place zero stars. Went in today to buy top neck clams. Asked if they were fresh, told they were. At 68 cents each I expect to get what I paid for and the truth about freshness. Asked for a bag of 50 which was $34.00. Clerk put some in the bag, then left to go to the back. Guess Im too trusting, proceeded to pay and take the clams out to put them in my cooler with a frozen gallon bottle to keep them cold for the 35 mile ride home. On my arrival, opened the cooler to get hit in the face with rotten seafood smell, upon washing them off found 13 opened (deadclams. Adding insult, there were only 47 of them. Note that once good clams are leaked on by dead ones, you may as well toss the rest! After washing, only a couple didnt STINK.
My friends brought crabs back to New Jersey to share with me! Love them and the loved the crabs! Delicious!
Great! Fresh and clean. Great customer service. A+
Weve been ordering crabs their, they are so fresh & large, you cant beat the price, I order all my seafood have not been disappointed yet. I highly recommended Lewes Fishhouse.
When you’re buying jumbo lump crab meat that’s what you expect to get. $65 for a pound of crab meat, what I got was not jumbo lump, barely even lump.
Great customer service. Very helpfulWill definitely go again
Reserved oysters & clams for July 4. Prices ended up being higher than elsewhere locally. Both the oysters & clams were dry like they were out of water for quite a while. Nowhere near quality seafood, especially in a beach community.
Good clam
Excellent service, clean place with a stylish decor.
Typically I dont cook seafood at home, especially shellfish ( normally I buy a salmon filet from a local grocery store). The gentlemen Pat or Matt ( Im not sure I heard his name correctlywas incredibly helpful, his suggestion on how to prepare and cook the fish was amazing. I got a new recipe!!! I would highly suggest this place for great service and wonderful seafood.
Excellent selection, all looks very fresh, prices are decent depending on selection. Got crab cakes for $10/each and some shrimp.
Great place to get fresh fish at good prices!!!
Disappointing. Ordered twice. Both times there were too many mushy, inedible crabs in the half bushel order.
First visit Friday. Bought clams and mussels and STEAMED crabs. Crabs were delicious! Had the clams and mussels over pasta. Will be a continuing customer for sure.
I ordered a dozen crabs for pickup and when I showed up they didn’t have my order. I asked if they would do them then and they wouldn’t. No apologies either! After reading the reviews here, I’m glad we didn’t get them. Doesn’t seem like crab is their specialty.
Ordered 1 1/2 lbs of fried cubed codfish. Pick up and went home to find fried whole pieces undercooked.
Nice people that run the place. Quality seafood.
I love this place. Its convenient and has what I need when I go there and I like the staff - you can tell they are "seafood people". My typical purchase there is the ex-large peeled and deveined shrimp that I steam on my own with beer and Old Bay. Also like their various fish options when Im making fish tacos. IMO, the reviews that say "order incorrect" - let that be a lesson to ALWAYS check your items when youre picking up. From the perspective of going in and visually inspecting/selecting - its a GREAT experience!!
Great, fresh seafood. Staff friendly and helpful
If you come from Maryland and expect good crabs, don’t come here. Was told they were Maryland #1. They were pre-steamed, full of water, light as a feather and the seasoning was put on after they were steamed. Typical Delaware steamed crabs. Can’t wait till the restaurants are able to open so I can go to Ocean City and surrounding Maryland towns to get good steamed crabs. Again, don’t waste your money thinking they are Maryland style steamed crabs.
Ordered shrimp for New Years with medium spice and what I received was plain shrimp. I do not want to complain but this is not my first mistake with Lewes Fish House. My advice is check order every time. I wish there were other choices in the area. Come on guys!
Horrible experience. We got 2 dozen crabs and when we went to eat them they were completely “mushy”. You could tell they had been sitting out and reheated. They were filled with water. We also got 2lbs of shrimp which were small for their “jumbo size” and were obviously frozen and not fresh. We had to throw out over $100 worth of food. I’ve eaten here in the past and had a good experience but unfortunately will not be back after this.
Year after year of excellence. We are locals and this has been our go to seafood store for a decade or more. Could only be fresher if I drove to Balto myself, year round.
This is a place where you can buy cod, rock fish, flounder, tuna for either sushi or western preparation, clams for steaming or in soups or on half shells, oysters, etc. All of it looked fresh. Good selection and service. Reasonable prices.
GreatSeafood!! And friendly staff.
We bought salmon, crab cakes, and steamed shrimp! All were excellent and at a great price!
Today was my 1st time in this store. I bought a variety of fish because the store was clean, the service was terrific and, while their prices are a little higher than I am used to (from Reno, NV), the freshness seemed worth the extra cost.
Great selection of fresh seafood. Great prices.
We went in hoping for fresh live blue claws But they only had ones that were cooked I heated them up in some butter and garlic with the tasty spice the nice lady gave me and they were absolutely delicious thank you thank you thank you!
Well just to say I just moved to the area and I want to by seafood for dinner. There prices are Horrible! I still went ahead and bought stuff to cook for dinner but I wont go back!
Been eating crabs for over 50 years and these were the worst ever. I could have dealt with the lightweight empty crabs and most were medium sized no larges in the mix. I could have survived that as well. But they were so overcooked water ran out of each of them and they were so mushy and salty. Never in my life have we thrown out crabs but with these we had no choice. So very disappointing. Couldnt even salvage to make a dip or crabcakes with. Never again!
Staff very nice. Selection limited but prices were extremely high. We live close but pass this place on our way to an anothers seafood market miles away.
Decent fish on offer, but prices pretty high. But, its still one of the better places in town to buy seafood.
We have ordered the shrimp cocktail several times and loved it. Plump, beautifully cooked shrimp that come out of the tail clean and easy. We added the cocktail crab claws and crab balls for NYE and they were just awesome! Tender, tasty and meaty. The staff is extremely helpful and pleasant as well.
This is 2nd consecutive year that our seafood order was incorrect; not what we ordered or paid for. We paid upcharge of $3 per platter for dry sea scallops and recd small scallops size of pencil erasers. French fries and corn were barely cooked and not edible. Save your money, time, frustration and purchase seafood elsewhere.
Selection super weak but staff is friendly.
Burnt .... shrimp not battered just thrown in dryer. Very disappointing for price.. NEVER AGAIN
Great local fish market with good prices.
Very good crab cakes, and I am pretty picky about crab cakes! Also really liked the softshell crab sandwich. Fresh softshell crabs from nearby Broadkill. They steamed up some softshell clams for us as well which were very good but they didnt have drawn butter for dipping. The sides were just okay. All three of the staff people who helped us were very friendly and did a great job. They had a great selection of seafood even on Sunday of memorial day weekend! Also a nice little picnic seating area outside. Great! Just wish they sold beer, but until then, bring your own!
I stopped in Lewes Fishhouse to purchase some fish.I was very impressed with the atmosphere in the store. First, store is very clean for a seafood market. Secondly, the people who works there very friendly. I got some fish and it was awesome. I will be back for stuff. Prices is very reasonable. Next thing I am going to get is CRABS.
Purchased a bushel of crabs for mothers day they were a nice size and heavy and very reasonably priced. While we were waiting for our crabs to cook we looked at their takeout menu and ended buying 5 of the platters. Again reasonably priced and very good. The staff is very friendly and the store is clean and doesnt smell like a fishhouse. We will definitely be back to checkout the fish selection. Dont pass up this hidden gem on route 1 for all of your seafood needs.
Ive had mixed experience with this location, but I visited here on a lark in late February 2016 to buy crab cakes, thought they were small and pricey so I went instead with lobster cakes. Absolutely fabulous. I dont know about much else, but those lobster cakes were to die for. Reminded me of a Maine lobster roll, without the roll. Yum!
DO NOT RECOMMEND! Over priced and dishonest. Poor management and a lack of customer service skills. Wont be returning.
I will not give Lewes Fishouse even 1 star. Purhased over a pound of salmon, refrigerated it quickly, unwrapped it for lunch the next day, and the salmon smelled awfull plus it was very slimmy!!! Brought it back right away, was told by a very rude salesperson (she was also unfriendly the day she waited on usthat she didnt know what I was smelling -- that it is "fish" -- thats what it smells like. As far as I know, fresh fish shouldnt smell so bad!! She replaced it with another piece of the same size - except when I opened the bag, the size of the fish was much smaller. I paid $25.99 for the original piece which was 1 1/2 lbs. I went back into the store to complain about the much smaller size, when another person came out from the back and asked if I needed help. At that point, the saleslady said she owed me another 1/2 lb. It wasnt until I got out of my car, went back in again, that she admitted to owing me another 1/2 lb. This happened after she told me she gave me the correct amount - 1/12 lbs. I will never go back again. Now I know why my friends advised me not to buy fresh fish from there. Very UNPLEASANT experience!!
Borderline fraud. When we spoke to them on the phone they told us that the crabs were medium/large and a half bushel was $130.00. After we paid for the crabs, I inspected them and most of them were practically empty shells, and they were not even close to "medium", forget about "large". They refused to refund us and told me "you get what you get", and only at that time did they say "well, its this time of year where they are not heavy". So, they lied about the size and the weight, refused to refund us, and didnt express the slightest "Im sorry". They also accused us of eating half of the crabs, and said "well how do you know they are empty then if you didnt crack them all open?" Um, its called a SCALE. They also didnt seem at all concerned either about the reviews that I promised to leave online, as if they hear this all the time. How they are still in business when they lie to their customers like this to their faces is incredible to me. And the fact that they wouldnt refund a customer for a seriously unacceptable product shows how desperate they must have been for our $130.00. So, if you decide to order blue crabs from here, shame on you, as you have been warned.Thankfully I know at least a few hundred people who live down here who will now know to never order seafood from these frauds ever, and I will be sharing this review to all 400 of my Facebook friends, and guys, please share this review with everyone on your google+/Facebook as well, so everyone knows to avoid this horrid establishment at all costs. God forbid if someone else throws 130.00 down the toilet like we did for 3.5 dozen empty "large blue crabs".
