Great Northern Hwy, New Norcia WA 6509, Australia, Victoria Plains
This is an excellent place to stay, comfortable room and the dining room was accessible 24hrs . The guest reading room is a great place.
Fantastic tour by guide, such an interesting place especially when you have no knowledge of its existence.
Well the shop was nice but the buildings and grounds look a bit direlict and shabby. The eating place closed since 2020, rather sad really, a long drive , didnt stay long, only place for refreshments was the petrol station. Wont go again
If travelling in a RV vehicle you can camp behind the petrol station/cafe or park on the oval for $10 per self contained RV but still have use of toilets in the village. Cafe serves great food. New Norcia sell their own bread, beer and wine at the information centre. Did the 2 hour guided tour, this place is amazing you can hear a pin drop at night. Should be on your bucket list.
Clean tidy and covid safe. Very interesting place to visit the tour guide was very interesting and knowledgeable. The monks were and are very talented lots to see in the museum and art gallery. The gift shop is well stocked and has some interesting things to sell. Could be a little boring for children but if they were over the age of 8 it could be interesting for them depending on how active they are.
This was an interesting place to visit and think about how the Monks would have travelled here, lived, built, worked etc. It wouldnt have been easy. The church had flies in the ceiling which were loud and it was good to experience the town and how it was all related to the monastery.
Great; pleasant place to shop.Staff friendly and knowledgeable
The monks @ New Norcia are amazing people. Please don’t let the dark history of this place from the 1970s sway you away from this gem of a place. Very few places offer the authentic Christian spirituality practiced by the monks here. If you are on a genuine search for truth and God, this is the place to be!
I’ve been working around New Norcia for the last month or so. Before coming up here I had no idea the place existed. Staying at some of the living quarters during this time and I have absolutely no complaints. Food is amazing and Julie at the monastery guesthouse is a real credit to the community here. Plenty to see for just a short stop and great just to relax for the week as well.
A must visit, well worth the effort
The abbots ale is delicious, can’t wait to try the Shiraz and Merlot cab. Attended a midday prayer in the chapel with the monks which was pleasant
The New Norcia settlement is an absolute must do! We did the 2 hour tour & an exta 2 hours on our own & could still have done more as it is so expansive.
Fabulous place to visit. So much history.
FABULOUS. I cant begin to say how much we enjoyed this place. Very good guided tour and wonderful history
Very interesting place to visit. Two hour tour of buildings well with $13 fee for senior. Guide very informative Husband is chef for the hotel on-site. Artwork and museum very good. Plenty of useful items in monastery shop at reception centre to purchase.
My friend and I didnt check the web and as a result we were 10 minute late for the afternoon group tour ...Thank you for the lady at the visitor centre, we could find nice places around on our own and utilize our 4-hour drive, return ...The old church is one of a kind ... the college is amazing ... the hotel, well, I wish I could check in ...Not much, of course, of the places for us to get in ... but from the impression, the placard, the building ... I could tell that they are important to our present being and to learn for a better present and future ...
I love the history of this place and it is very peaceful to me . also the guide is very kind and shows us all the things from the past . It is very keen to visit you should definitely go to new norica .
Disgusting, needs to be shut down and demolished. A blight on West Australias history, our very own Auschwitz.
Went to attend a holy mass last Friday, its my first to be here and I was fascinated by the architectural design, needless to say the choir who sang during the mass was outstanding.
I would highly recommend the Abbotts Dinner, the food was awesome, all the staff worked so hard to make the evening very special. The accommodation and breakfast was great too. The guided tour, visitors centre, art gallery and surrounding buildings are all very interesting. Well worth a visit and not far from Perth. If you havent been you are missing out.You dont have to be religious to enjoy New Norcia.
Fascinating insight to a different life of Monks who first came from Spain, settling to work with the local indigenous population
An educational 2hr walking tour of the Benedictine Community at New Norcia was an inspiring informative activity that we adults and the kids totally enjoyed. How much work these monks did back in the 1800s was staggering. The head monk went back to Perth to perform a concert four times a year for ten years to raise money to support his community. Some great construction artworks, handmade lace to see and Abbey ale and bread to buy. Really worth a visit to keep this wonderful place around for future generations.
New Norcia is Australias only monastic town, established in 1847 by Spanish Benedictine monks and still operates as a Benedictine Monastery today. It has a fascinating an alternative history of the colony of WA as recorded and lived by the early Spanish missionaries.
Fantastic place..great power site behind the roadhouse..very hot shower but very grubby needs some cleaning and sprucing up bigtime..The 2hr walking tour was magnificent and def worth doing
Lovely and serene town with plenty of history to go around. It’s a lovely place to take a walk and read about the rich history of all the buildings located in this town. There are guided tours available if that’s your thing as well. The products from the bakery are great, even if you can’t visit the bakery itself. All up you could spend a couple of hours here - worth it if you’re passing by!
I give five star for the old historical building and will give one star for history behind it
So many people still don’t know about this place and it’s great! Not only do we have some Australian history we have some of the best architectural buildings here with rich history!Definitely worth the stop and doing the tours! Also definitely do the museum section which has a lot of interesting things to see! Highly recommend seeing this place and what it has to offer.
A MUST DO TOURIST ATTRACTION OF WA.Awe inspiring! The tour was an information packed journey into the history of New Norcia. Our guide was delightful and so open with answers as well as been very accommodating. The gift store full of wonderful items... Oh and the bread, delicious. The cafe inviting also adorned with history of the community, with the standard fair of offerings. No need to be religious at all to visit, athough Catholic the history shows New Norcia is open to all religious beliefs. *Controversy aside.
Did the long drive from Perth with my wife and sister-in-law but wish I didnt after I looked up the history on the place after we got home. The worst child abuse in Australia and there is nothing here about the aboriginal people and what they suffered.None of the art work has anything about them even being here. The buildings are all falling to bits even the grounds and the gardens looking bad.I would like to say sorry to the aboriginal elders for our visit here never to return.
The monastery is beautiful! We have visited there on a day trip and have had the privilege of going on weekend retreat there too. Everyone is so welcoming there. This a beautiful sanctuary of real peace.
Interesting place. Only worth a visit once, but add it to your list if passing through.
My husband and I love to come here for a drive, even if only to buy a bottle of Port and some wood fired bread! We often bring a picnic with us and enjoy the peace and quiet. I have come here a few times on my own and stayed in the guesthouse for some time in prayer and contemplation. It is a quiet, serene environment ideal for this. The rooms are old but clean and comfortable. The price per night includes three meals, breakfast which is a help yourself style with cereals, breads and condiments provided. Lunch is three courses and comes with a carafe of the Benedictine rose wine. Dinner is two courses and also comes with wine. Every time I have come I have met some beautiful people and enjoyed wonderful times of fellowship. The tour is well worth the money and gives you an insight in to what lies behind the buildings. If you come here expecting entertainment you may be disappointed, in a world that is over stimulated it can be hard to adapt to a place such as this! But if you are seeking rest and direction in your life I highly recommend this little piece of heaven.
Historic, spiritual and peaceful. The monks are incredibly hospitable and wise, also some of the best olive oil and woodfired bread in the country. It is definitely worth joining the monks for prayer and a silent lunch if you can. Even better if you stay overnight.
Whole place gave me the creeps. Very bad vibes. Trying to imagine a girls school with a monk community across the road in the middle of nowhere - it just doesnt seem kosher. The graveyard behind the monastery was sort of interesting but in general its hardly worth the drive from Perth to look at half a dozen buildings you cant go into.
Amazing historic town, approx 150km north of Perth. Well worth a visit.
A really fun weekend experience and opportunity for some well needed time out.
For a must see attraction in Perth this day trip was not worth the travel. Surprisingly, on a Saturday all the places were shut besides the visitor centre (gift shopand the hotel where we had lunch. Lunch was pretty good considering how terrible the rest of the village is. I do not recommend visiting New Norcia.
Do the combined tour for only 25 bux. It is worth it.
We were taken here by our friends when we first moved to Perth. We couldnt believe that there was a real functioning monastery this far away from civilisation. The history of the monks is amazing, having walked all the way here to work with the local indigenous communities in the area. Mind you I would be remiss if i didnt mention the part played by the monks during the stolen generation. But for history buffs it great , and the wine, beer and bread you can buy here is fantastic. It can also be found in certain bakeries in Subiaco. But there is nothing like getting it fresh.
Loved it! Interesting history. Quaint little outpost. Good to do the guided walking tour. Roadhouse or hotel pub for easy meals. Pleasant 90 minutes drive north from Perth city
A most unusual place, in the middle of nowhere. We go often for the peace and quiet time to reflect and recharge. Everything is clean and the food tasty and nourishing, no frills. Remember you are a guest at the Dominican Monastry. The only Monastic town in Australia. Lovely staff and very affordable.
A very peaceful place. It was wonderful to join the monks in their prayer times. But its also a very sad place if you know about the history and the bad things happened to the indigenious people here in the name of the Christian faith. For more information therere information displays but they dont tell the whole truth. Better pay a visit to the Museum of Western Australia in Perth - theres a whole section just dealing with this topic.Anyway: New Norcia nowadays is a lovely place and well worth for a visit.
We had no idea that this community existed until we drove past. It is locunateud just off the inland Western Australia highway and if you blink you will miss it. We had to do a u turn to visit this incredibly beautiful location of significant religious importance. The buildings and surrounding area was truly beautiful and should be must visit site on your next travel itinerary.
Fabulous. Tours available at 12pm and 1:30pm. The pub was great. I havent been so impressed with a pub meal in years. Gift shop lovely but very expensive.
With low traffic volumes coming through town now, has created an awesome place to camp, visit and capture the Milky Way.
Most gently peaceful place Ive been to I n long long time. The tour was excellent with the history explained in a non religious way. Lunch at the hotel was very tasty and large portions. Very good value place to visit.
The monastery is big, mass was beautifully celebrated. There was cofee, tea and snacks after mass. Joined a town tour. The tour guide was a Filipino lady. She was very friendly n spoke easy to understand English. Its a beautiful place. Do drop by if you visit Perth.
It was our first time there and despite our interest in the village and its history, we were disappointed with the tour. We were expecting one of the monks or someone really involved in the community that could really transmit what living in New Norcia is and instead, our tour guide was a lady that just arrived in the village a few years ago. She had good knowledge, all has to be said, and she was very nice
A beautiful place. Chapels are beautiful. Well worth a visit and do the guided tour.
Lovely old architecture inside and out you can take amazing photos, nice relaxing environment and early settle history very interesting. Plus the Bakery... , which is half the reason we went was closed for 3 weeks ... Not meationed on the web site we would have gone when it was open.Hotel only serves between 12 and 2.3 .Had my elderly Parents so they didnt want to do full 2hr tour walking everywhere as the temp can get quite hot there to.. maybe a mini bus for some of the elderly and others who are unable to walk as well.. you can drive yourself around but i did notice a few people with caravans which would have been to hard to maneuver around in the small lanes and tracks around the area.Maybe some interacting tours e.g. how they make the olive oil.. make your own bottle of oil or soap and charge accordingly for the tour.. So we could only go in to the chapel and 2 room mud brick house. and then pay $10 for a Museum tour of a three storey building which the elevator only goes to the 1st floor and only ac on the 2 floor only thing which had been updated since the 70 was the elevator...Anyhow we had a lovely day and nice meal ...definitely check it out needs some updating to accommodate for everyone ..☺
