Southern Spice in Chennai

Had a delicious feast of more food than we can eat. Great service from our host Bala. Not the cheapest place in Chennai, but well worth it.

The traditional meal here was nice. Had a great experience. Lovely atmosphere. Enjoyed the time spent with the family. Family get together. Worth and recommended. Cheers!

The number of stars is less for their food and service.Madhav’s service was unmatched. He suggested the right items as per the taste. He even offered to take pictures and provided complimentary dessert - coconut payasam and kafi ice cream which undoubtedly are the best I ,you or anyone has ever tasted.Coming to the food,1. Vanjaram podi varuval- the 2 seer fish fillets were perfectly cooked, soft inside and the spices were a perfect combination. I am a fish lover and this is a paradise.2. Mutton ishtew- perfect blend of coconut, mutton and curry leaves. Madhav suggested to try it with Appam which was an amazing combination. This was one of my favourites and is a must try3. Rayalaseema mamsam Biryani - the authentic Andhra style biryani had a hot and spicy flavour. It catered to our spicy taste buds along with raita4. Southern spice ginger punch - it was a sweet combination of ginger with coconut water and lemon and the ginger taste was dominant.5. Coconut Payasam- this was served complimentary and must say that we were lucky to have tasted it. It had subtle sweet taste. Best part was it was made of jaggery instead of sugar.6. Kafi ice cream - subtle sweet coffee ice cream which was home made.Ambiance- it is definitely beautiful with silver coated spoons and copper glasses. The ceramic South Indian style plates were different.Overall I’m glad we visited the place during our stay.

One of the Best South Indian Fine Dining Restaurant in Chennai. Have been visiting this place for long and the service only gets better. Our usual is their signature thali and they take their own time to serve the full course and make sure you have 2 to 3 hours to complete the thali. There will be no complaints on the food except for the wait time. Their crab is our favourite. Theres hardly any bad item in here. Just in case if you can afford the pricing. Go For it.

We had a fantastic dining experience at Southern Spice in the Taj Coromandel hotel. The staff were very polite and the classical interior design set the perfect tone for our Tamil cuisine evening. We kicked off with hot melagu rasam and a basket of small fried vadams, followed by murungai elai vadai and vazhaipoo cutlet. Omg!. It was AMAZING!. Main course was kadala curry with appam and idiyappam. It was worth it.

Amazing restaurant that serves delicious and nutritious food. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. They helped me celebrate my mom’s surprise birthday.

We went there as a nine member group and had a fantastic time.Would recommend you visit as a group to try many dishes vs one or two if you go as a group of two.The quantity, quality and taste are perfection as is the trademark of Southern Spice.The negatives,I had to remind the staff about my order a couple of times before they got it to my table.Do not choose Southern spice if you dont have atleast 2 hours to spare, as every dish takes time and the service is quite slow as they seem to be understaffed. The entire place seemed to be managed by just 2-3 staff.That said, I dont regret the two + hours we spent there as we had a great time catching up as family and the dishes were totally worth the wait.

Good ambience, tasty food , courtesy staff . Tasted their onam Sadya today and it was a whole range of dishes adhering to the Kerala Sadya style.Recommended ! And yes visiting again

Southern Spice has been a dining destination since 1996 for my family. The experience of hospitality and warmth has been the epitome of success. The consistency and texture of the cuisines have been maintained for decades.The dining experience yesterday has been a disappointment. I had taken my guest to experience the southern aroma and specialties. It all started when we entered I had booked the table in the morning for dinner but my booking was not there. But they were very kind enough to arrange a table for us.The service was a letdown. We had ordered our starters which came sizzling hot and were served. We were served one bottle of water for 7 of us. We requested more bottles and there were very few responses, we requested repeatedly but we still didnt get water on our table. Finally, I had to stand and draw the attention of the staff for water then we could see some response. Later we also ordered the main course in which only one dish came and the rest was never served nor informed if it is going to be served.With no choice, we had to just finish the dinner with one dish only. While paying the cheque we informed that the dishes ordered were not served but we got a cold response.It was a downer experience for the family and guests. Hope they improve their service standards and not disappoint the lasting experience which we had enjoyed over time.

Just dined today. The service was outstanding -- the head chef personally greeted us and the waiting staff offered for us to sample different foods. The atmosphere was definitively south indian -- from the plates to the waiters uniforms to the decorations. And the food was superb of course. Highly recommend if youre in town.

We dined there quite a few times during our stay. We enjoyed the thali meals as well as the a la carte items. Do not order the thali meals if you cannot do justice to the quantity and number of items. The service was really good. Special shout out to Bala. He went out of the way to serve us especially accommodate and suggest food items for both of my kids.

Good place to have Southern food. Great service by entire team led by Mr.Shiva. specially, Mr.Bala takes care of each aspect from the time of arrival to departure in Restaurant. Kudos to entire team.

Thought I would have a better experience. Guess too much ghee makes it too stuffing.Service was a bit slow.

After 2022 review, food quality and service changed a lot. Booked reservations 3 times from the usa but it wasnt there on the day. They did accomodate me but food was very basic and lacked the taste it used to have. Also service quality wasnt good due to understaff.Amazing awesome tasty food. Must experience if visiting Chennai from USA.

The lunch thali is really good. You get a good sampling of a few different items , all of which are prepared excellently. You have choices of a Veg Thali, Non Veg Thali and Fish Thali.

A wonderful place to dine in but I wonder how its still named southern spice after theyve removed two of the most important and famous delicacies of South India, Idly and Dosa. Big turn off as you dont have South Indias most loved items on the menu.Ps: I was told you took it down because someone complained why we have to pay so much for idly and dosa but doesnt the same apply to Thair Sadham and freely available Puliohara?

Southern spice offers authentic South Indian cuisines. It has handpicked kerala, tamilnadu and karnataka style dishes which are top notch and fantastic.Kodi kempu bezzule was luscious. The dining experience was classy.

There was nothing extraordinary about the food. Just an average South Indian meal. I have had better South Indian meal at a smaller restaurant. Not worth the money you pay.

I went there for a late dinner one night, even though the kitchen was closing, the staff made full effort to patiently serve me everything I had ordered. They gave me great suggestions on what would suit my palette.And the food I tried was amazing. Never before I had tasted idiyamppam and korma so good that I got here. The servers were exceptional too.I liked this place so much that I couldnt stop my self for lunch again the following day, where the servers were delighted that I visited again and remembered me from last night.For these reasons, this is hands down the best place ever I have been for South Indian food. Everything is top notch, the ambience, the people, the management. You will be treated like royalty from the moment you enter this place. The servers will understand your preferences and will recommend food that you will remember for a long time.A special mention to the catering assistant at the time, M.SIVAKUMAR, who made my visit exceptional experience.If you are anywhere in Chennai, highly recommend to check this place out.

Treated like royalty. Great ambience. Warm and friendly staff. Always willing to help one choose what one wants to eat and always willing to tweak something just the way wes want it. Since our dinner was light we didnt really taste their signature preparations to talk of them here...

Its the people who work at this restaurant that make it so amazing to visit every single time. Especially Mr Shiva and Mr Shafi. They go out of their way to keep the clients happy. They are so good that they literally make me travel from Bangalore to Chennai just to eat their Naimeen Malabar Biryani. The chef continues to make it in a very delicious manner.

First time when I was alone, service was good. This time we had to ask to everything - service was terrible. Really disappointed - wouldnt recommend to anyone. There was 1 person serving but he spent majority of his time billing rather than looking after guest. We had to ask for rice, dessert options etc

Celebrating madras week at Southern spice at Taj Coromandel one of the best south indian restaurants in Chennai.The ambience and decor is from the 4 States of southern India. The usual food that is served in the restaurant is food from these 4 States.We visited the restaurant for the madras week and so we got to taste the Flavours of Madras.We started our lunch with the crispies rice, lentil, Lotus stem and onion rings, served with coconut, coriander leaves, ginger and ridge gourd dips. The kozhi rasam aka South Indian chicken soup opened up our sinus blocks. The starters were star dishes of Chennai, chicken fry, pepper prawns, adai, beetroot vada and fish fry.We cleansed our Palate with 2 very beautiful looking and the most tastiest immunity booster mocktails. One with pineapple jaggery and ginger and another with pomegranate and cinnamon.The main course look us down a food trail of Chennai with mutton curry, fish curry, spiced shredded chicken, special sambar, kootu, idiappam ( string hopperskothu parotha and appam.The desserts were the madras week special and the southern spice special with Kesari, payasam, filter coffee icecream, tender coconut payasam and badam halwa.It was truly a grand celebration of Madras week.Must tell that they have taken care of all safety measures. Our masks were down only to eat and to click a few pictures. We maintained all protocols and so did the hotel and their staff.

Outstanding food, lavish settings and royal service. Southern Spice is an iconic restaurant in Chennai which serves cuisines from all the states of South India. This is part of the Taj group and in true Taj style doesn’t fail to wow you. Must visit restaurant in Chennai.

Great ambience. Manager and Staff were friendly. The menu had limited option handpicked from the South Indian region. If you are in rush then this place is not an option. Sit back and enjoy your food with patience

The service was slow and since it was late at night had to request to get the items faster as conversation went on for a long time.

We have ordered for thali.. really very tasty and I liked were poriyal, tomato pappu,sambar, vegetable kurma,and end of meal we are Really enjoyed the dessert payasam.hats off to the courteous very kind service from Mr.Siva kumar and Ms.ishwarya in southern spice. i highly recommend this experience was really enjoyed.

Loved the place ..its perfect for any important occasions .. we went there for my moms birthday and they cut the cake and celebrated it..coming to the food ..you can taste perfect authentic South Indian food..it was delicious. The only con is that the price is high .. obviously its a 5 star hotel it has to be high..
