A regular go-to restaurant for my family and me. The St. James is a great local restaurant with history, atmosphere (especially at the barand great food at reasonable prices. Their broasted chicken is hands down the best of any broasted chicken around.
This place never disappoints, the staff is amazing, and the food is always amazing!
One of the very best places in the area to have an enjoyable meal .
Really good place to eat (as long as you can find the right time to eat here, normally is pretty busy). Their prices are fair even with the overall inflation going on. Not a five star restaurant, but a nice place to get some good hamburgers and steak for a family sit-down.
The Saturday evening soup special was loaded potato soup. It is homemade and it is excellent. Potato soup is one of my favorite soups and believe me St. James potato soup is one of the best.
St James Restaurant is a hidden gem in Avilla, IN. I highly recommend their broasted chicken.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and everything was delicious! I concur with their confidence on the deliciousness of their fried chicken.
The staff is amazing and the food is always great.
I had chef salad and thier homemade ranch dressing..delicious.Hubby had grilled fish..no bun..boring..hahaha..he said it was delicious.Anxious to go back.
Always excellent food and service. So glad it is nearby and dependable.
Hostess Pam wasnt very courteous to customersBeware there are up charges on everythingWasnt told there would be a charge for putting my dinner on a credit card. Nothing was posted on the front door as I was told or posted on the menu regarding credit card fee.Waitress was disconnected..didnt get my order correct. Greek salad had old leaves & was served this way.DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING TO THIS PLACE.
The service is very good. The people were very welcoming. I recommend the fries fish on Fridays. All in all a very good experience.
Had the broiled cod. It was fantastic. A very big portion and fixed just right.A. Wonderful waitress. We came from Lakeville. Only the second time we had visited.
Broasted chicken was excellent. Though very busy we had a great server. This is an excellent option for dining.
20 of us eat there every year on our greater Indiana golf package.
Had a rehearsal dinner there. Food was absolutely delicious. Chicken was nice and hot, service was good and friendly. They were very accommodating. Will definitely go back for dinner!
Great food. Friendly staff.
The service was great! The atmosphere was great! The food was absolutely perfect!
St. James was nice and good service but all items are ala cart, so it was a bit pricey.
Decent food. I was incredibly disappointed in the steaks. Didnt seem to matter how you ordered them, they all seem to be cooked to medium.
My parents have raved about this place for years. I had the opportunity to have dinner at st. James this week with my parents and a family friend. Broated chicken -- best ever. Nice family owned establishment. Highly recommend
I hadnt been here in decades and was totally impressed by the quality of the food, outstanding service and excellent prices. I enjoyed a broasted chicken dinner and my dining companion had the fish sandwich platter. I would travel a distance for such a wonderful experience.
The house vinegar and oil dressing is Devine! Authentic German and American food served with a smile, I have always been pleased here.
It is a very good atmosphere, pleasant and helpful staff. I have been eating here for over 30 years, and I dont believe I have ever had a bad experience. Highly recommended. Went there just before Valentines day, to beat the crowds, had the New York Strip and it was cooked perfectly. Also recommend the broasted chicken.
St. James is a great out of the way restaurant. The menu offers great variety and food is excellent. We have been regular customers for over 50 years. The service we received from Stacy was the best ever. Thanks for the great early Valentines Day experience.
Great bar. Our burgers were over cooked. The American potatoes were delicious. I wish I had tried their homemade pies.
Very clean and friendly. And the food is 1st rate. I always stop by if Im in town. The week day specials sound great.
Food and service was great! Here is the smothered chicken with green beans.
Wonderful menu from appetizers to desserts. Nice beer menu. Wine and full bar available. Always delicious food and good service. Have been a customer for years!!
Unassuming restaurant with surprisingly great food! The crab cakes are wonderful, and the steak was cooked to perfection.
Great restaurant! Great food! Been in operation for over 100 years! You wont want to miss it. The bar is beautiful and the service is great! Worth the stop!
Have been going here all my life. I honestly have never had anything that was not excellent. The staff, many long term, are friendly and remember names and sometimes even orders. LOVE this place
Great food, great service. Small town atmosphere with better than average food. Prime rib is excellent. Call ahead seating for a 20 minute wait for 2 on a Saturday evening.
We went here a couple weeks ago for my mom’s birthday. It was our first time and we will definitely be coming back. We all really enjoyed our food. The broasted chicken was excellent and so was the service.
This place is amazing ! I ordered a ribeye (mediumand Spaetzle both were prepared perfectly! My lady ordered a pork chop a bratwurst and German potato salad and raved about her meal as well. The service was excellent and the restaurant is beautiful.
My friend and I had Walleye, it was the special, just full of bones, we were told that is normal, I have had walleye fir years and never have I experienced bones before so I dont think it is normal, so they took it away and brought us the toughest Cod I have ever eaten, we were charged for the Walleye in the end at a whopping $21.00. Our waitress was wonderful but the food was such a disappointment!!!
I had the broasted chicken because it was a different color on the menu and the special of the day. It was actually quite good not disappointed at all. If I didnt have to drive 4 hours home I probably would have tried the alcohol ice cream it sounded delicious.
Sour waitress, over cooked cod and OVER CHARED $14.50. Seems they have a broiled sea food combo listed in two different locations on the menu. I ordered the $18 one and they charged $25. On top of everything I could not eat my salad as it was ALL arugula. And yet I was charged for it. BE WARNED. THE ALSO CHARGE EXTRA FOR USE OF CREDIT CARDS.
The ribs and grilled cheese are amazing. Carrot cake and coffee made for the perfect after dinner treat. You cant go wrong with anything you order here.
Slightly disappointed to find out Thursday is smoked pork chop and not Friday, but the meal was still great!
We had dinner this evening at the St James. The steaks were cooked to perfection! We eat out a lot and have been to many other restaurants in the surrounding area including Auburn and Fort Wayne, but this is one of our favorites. Not only because of the quality food, but the service has always been exceptional and very friendly. We would highly recommend the St James to anyone who hasnt had the pleasure of dining here already. Thank you to the St James owners and staff!
When ordering, one has to consider where they are at. Considering the prices, I didn’t trust the steaks to be anything extraordinary despite them supposedly being known for that. So, I decided to order the pork chop. My husband ordered the Reuben. The pork chop was adequate, nothing outstanding. For the price, it was what I expected. The baked potato was potato bag quality. My husband enjoyed his Reuben. The service was good, but honestly after reading the last review, who was correct on the quality of the food, it kind of makes me not want to come back. It has a neighborhood vibe. Who cares if your customer is uncomfortable as long as the manager and his special customers are comfortable. Apparently, some customers aren’t customers here.Might be worth a stop if you’re in the area but not worth a drive from Fort Wayne.
Came here for lunch after a burial ceremony at the St. Marys cemetery. Had a long table in the back room to visit. Many relatives had the bean soup, chicken noodle soup, braised chicken, reuben sandwich, salad with grilled chicken and hamburger! It was all delicious and satisfied us after being out in the cold for an hour! The waitress was friendly and even took our group picture.
Convenient, never overly crowded, the food is always fantastic and the service is sometimes slow when theyre crowded. (If youre grouchy, in a hurry or think you are the only patron, you may not like it but dont complain about it.Its a great place to take the whole family, too.
Great local historic spot to eat!Love all the seafood. And just had breakfast which was also very good.A must stop if your in the area or headed down Highway 3
Today we were had dinner at St James and the food was really amazing and the service was top notch. This is a wonderful place to dine its up scale with a amazing environment
Nov 30, 2019. Great service on a Saturday afternoon with server Amanda. The smothered chicken was delicious with sauteed onions, mushrooms, and sauce. The apple dumpling was an excellent add on to finish the meal.
Delicious food and atmosphere for busy workweek lunch to date night on a weekend. Popular place so at times there can be a wait to be seated and served. Ive enjoyed many trips to St James and recommend it to anyone. They often host conference banquets and meetings for local community. Worth the drive if you are passing by or out of town. Staff works hard and enjoys serving you.
Everything I have had here has been very well done. Warm and welcoming environment. The seafood and broiled chicken is good and the German options are well prepared. Lots of very nice dessert options. The lobster bisque is absolutely phenomenal when available!
We went in around 1:15 on a Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. We got seated within 10 minutes. The waitress was friendly and very attentive. We had a little bit of a wait on the food though. I am guessing because of all of the other customers and we had 7 people in our party. I had a chicken club sandwich with an actual chicken breast, thin slices of ham, bacon, lettuce and tomato. Which was very good. I also had green beans and some very tasty cole slaw.Everyone else was satisfied with their food also.
