The Frick Pittsburgh in Allegheny County
Privilege
Ventured out late on a fall Sunday so didnt have time to visit the museum. There happened to be an open house at the Clayton, though, which was a nice surprise. All the docents were welcoming and informative. Lovely grounds and greenhouse with a nice variety of plants. (Dont miss the aptly named goldfish plant. Also a number of benches and chairs throughout the grounds which (IMHOencourage visitors to turn away from devices for a bit and just enjoy the surrounding nature. From what I learned, this is very much in keeping with Helen Clay Fricks mission and wishes. Will return.
MoreThe Frick Mansion is absolutely beautiful inside and out, the tour takes you through the entire house, except the forth floor, there are no ropes or barriers and 90% of everything in the house is original to when The Fricks built and lived in it.
MoreBeautiful little museum, gardens, and greenhouse. Free entry to galleries, gardens, and auto museum. Thursday through Sunday there are tours of the gilded age house and there is a charge for those and you need to reserve in advance. Various parts are undergoing renovation so the parking lot was closed when I was there ( plenty of free street parkingas were some galleries but there were several special exhibits. The auto museum is about to close for building repairs. So its hit and miss for the next year whats open but you cant complain because its free. The gardens are always changing so there is always something new to see.
MoreUnder renovation but key highlights still accessible. Loved Romare Beardon and the Car & Carriage exhibit. Gorgeous grounds!
MoreThoroughly enjoyed the Romare Beardan exhibit! The rest of the museum and grounds were lovely as well!
MoreBeautiful campus with free museums. Very clean restroom facilities and a nice gift shop. The car & carriage museum was very cute and informative. If you go you can take a photo in an old Ford. The docent in there was kind and helpful without being pushy.I wish I could say more on the Art museum since thats actually what brought us to the Frick. When we were there almost the entire Art museum was closed off except one short, looping video and their $15 special exhibit (a wonderfully curated Romare Bearden exhibitionso it wasnt really free for us if we wanted to see anything while there. Neither of the two people at the front door bothered telling us while taking our ticket money. The single docent in the rotunda (directly behind where you enter, the rest of the museum branches off from itwatched us wander up to all the closed off doors and said nothing until I finally asked if we were supposed to open the doors because only half actually had "Closed" signs. It was very awkward, especially when they said something about the museum not putting all their signs up. What??
MoreSummer 2022. Parking lot closed. Regular exhibit down to about 10 paintings that are awesome. Special exhibit: didnt go.
MoreThe grounds are free and open to the pubñic dawn till dusk. Hidden gem. Bring a picnic and frisbee! No pups
MoreGorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous. Step back into time while touring the breathtaking Frick home and exquisite grounds. Our docent Deb was amazing! Truly made our tour informative and fun! A visit to The Frick Pittsburgh is free. This includes the grounds, art museum, carriage house, and greenhouse. If you would like to tour the Clayton it costs $10.00. It was well worth the fee. The Frick Pittsburgh Visitors Center is where your guided tour of the Clayton begins. It also has a lovely gift shop in it, along with lockers, places to sit and relax, and gender neutral restrooms. Make sure to stop and get something to eat and drink at the Cafe. It will not disappoint!
MoreFairly small, but scenic groundsEven though the museum is a bit small, the collection is very beautiful and seeing the vintage cars is interesting. At the visitors center and throughout the grounds, keep an eye out for Luke, a friendly local cat who visits every now and then who appreciates pets!
MoreWent to see art exhibit, SLAY, paintings by artists depicting Judith. Liked the exhibit, though quite graphic. Was not familiar with that particular story. The female artist had a very interesting background. The male artist is the one who did the Obama portrait, his canvas was huge, reminded my daughter of a quilt. I was glad we went, it was quite informative.
MoreDocent you as excellent. Did a great job explaining the paintings
Only visited the Car and Carriage Museum Admission is Free. Car and carriages are well maintained and displayed. A hidden gem
MoreGreat museum. A true treasure. The exhibits are so well done.
Nice museum to visit when in Pittsburgh. We checked out the green house, gift shop and car museum and just walked the grounds. You can also get a tour of the Frick house or grab some dinner which we opted out of this trip. (Everything was free other than the house tour and of course dining). Very interesting and knowledgeable friendly staff in the car museum. Worth the stop!
MoreBeautiful park,greenhouse and museum
This place is really neat. The Frick house (dark inside, our guide had to use a flashlight at timesand the family history is a must, our guide Charles was excellent ( five stars!); the kids will like the carriage museum, however I think the entire campus is more for adults. The Cafe is worth visiting, food is good, its convenient and the atmosphere is comfortable.
MoreIve been going there since I was little and have always loved it. The house is stunning, the car museum has a great collection spanning decades, and the art museum is great too. Their permanent art collection isnt very large but they have some beautiful pieces. Though the best part is they have some amazing temporary shows, with a huge variety in mediums, styles, eras, artists, etc. Ive never eaten in the cafe so I cant vouch for that but everything else is fantastic. Ive also taken Pre-K students on a field trip to the car museum and they really liked it
MoreA Victorian Era gem in Pittsburgh. Do the house tour. There is also an antique car collection and an art gallery. Nice little cafe on the grounds as well. Great place to spend an afternoon.
MoreAwesome place to visit and take some time to enjoy some history, art, classic cars, flowers, and the great outdoors. Everything being free and accepting donations with the exception of the house tour which is paid is amazing.
MoreIts a nice place to stop by. We visited the art museum, it had antique painting and good location. We walked around to the small green house. Unfortunately, the café and Frick residential was closed so we will go back someday again.
MoreLoved the carriage and car museum. As a master gardener I was disappointed in the Conservatory. Its not Phipps, but it would benefit having more of the plants identified. The art was very good; just not styles that I enjoy.
MoreThe cafe is tiny! The pictures are very very deceiving. Unfortunately, we could not eat there because there were no high tea accommodations available when we went. They dont take reservations either so you take a risk if you plan your day around it. Over priced too. The grounds were beautiful though. We took great pictures in the greenhouse and the museum.
MoreWow, what can I say about this place. We were just driving through Pittsburgh and wanted to see what was there to see. We drove past the frick and decided to take a look. What an experience! This free attraction was better than many paid museums Ive been to. The tapestries were beautiful, the sculptures and exhibit on the temporary BLM exhibit were fascinating. The cars on display were amazing. A very worthwhile museum to visit. The staff were very helpful and even the store was tastefully done and not overstated. If you have not been here yet, make time to come.
MoreMuch automotive history to explore based on one persons life. As a transportation buff I really enjoyed this exhibit with my near-80 year-old uncle. I am grateful for something as simple as this for an attraction. This was a must-see item while visiting from Florida. Thanks to all of those who make this possible for the public to enjoy.
MoreOne of the better traditional art museums on the city. Ive been here a few times. They have great travelling exhibitions and the free car museum is so fun. I like it much better than the Carnegie )since the Carnegie has so many replicas). The mansion is beautiful too and worth touring. The cafe has a decent afternoon tea service too if you happen to be there
MoreDespite some if the rooms and one if the building being closed, the Frick was great. A realitjvky small museum with some great renaissance and middle ages artwork.
MoreNice museum and grounds. Worth a visit only if you have the time. There are many Pittsburgh sights to see, after all.
MoreThe excellent small art museum. Amazing old cars in Carriage museum. Nice park. Everything is free. The Clayton historical house is temporary closed.
MoreNeat place, especially because admission is free. I really liked the car and carriage museum. The greenhouse was pleasant as well.
MoreI liked it, and liked the temporary exhibit on fashion much more than I expected. It was a smaller museum than I thought and is a quick stop. The permanent collection on display was very small, though since that is free one can’t be too critical.I would like to have spent more time strolling around the grounds and nearby park, but had places to go.
MoreFrick has done it again with really fun and interesting exhibits. We enjoyed ourselves so much checking out the sweet ceramic centerpiece art, antique sporting fashion, and dramatic hood ornaments. Perfect summer weather for a little walk around the grounds, too. They have great outside seating if you want to bring food or Doordash since the cafe is being renovated. Get there asap if you like a little culture on the side in beautiful Point Breeze.
MoreWhat a beautiful place! Although Clayton (the housewas closed, the art collection was thought-provoking and impressive and the green house was beautiful.
MoreDuring June 2021 there are just a few galleries open-- you can easily view this art museum in an hour to an hour and a half-- but dont forget there is also a car and carriage museum, a small greenhouse and a lovely garden area to explore. It is free, but you need to reserve a time slot which you can do online. We went on a Tuesday and were nearly the only two people there! Dont miss this lovely place! The visitors center is now open (June 1, 2021- it houses the restrooms, soft drinks and snacks, gift shop and water bottle refill station. There are benches and tables outdoors, where you can eat your snacks. Plan to spend 2-3 hours on the Frick grounds. The family home (Clayton house?is undergoing repairs and is not currently open for tours. So there is an art museum, car museum and small greenhouse to visit here.
MoreVery much enjoyed the Frida Kahlo exhibit and the rest of the museum. Also the Car and Carriage museum was very enjoyable with the hood ornament exhibit. Not crowded on a weekday and easy to socially distance!
MoreOffers some world class exhibits in a small museum setting. While the grounds are lovely for a lazy break people watching strollers on the green. The grounds as well as the car museum (not main museumare free to roam. The car museum even has a vintage car you can crawl in and the volunteers that work inside it are eager to share their knowledge. My 80 something father loved the car museum part. Gets 4 instead of 5 stars from me because special exhibit cost are steep in comparison to special exhibitions in major cities with more extensive displays and the small greenhouse, while free leaves much to be desired.
MoreI feel like I missed something while I was here. I came on free reciprocal membership day where they partner with local museums and offer free membership for a designated day. The art museum was very lack luster. Not too much history was shared on the pieces and what I primarily saw was jewelery and vases. I wasnt too impressed with their limited supply. Congrats, you bought Tiffany jewelery. If it were on the free day, I would have been very dissapointed on the cost of admission vs delivery. I also feel like I was not fully informed on what they had to offer where. I was not aware of the carriage house or greenhouse (not sure if that was open in the middle of winter though. When I visited there over the summer there definitely was a prudish atmosphere. Dont wear jeans and a t-shirt if going. Their food did smell good but the prices seemed a bit high for what everybody else was getting. It is nice that they offer free admission on certain days/times and concerts for people to enjoy during their stay. I would not pay admission to come back but the park next door is nice and if I happened to be there visiting and I notice its during free admission hours, Id take a brief stop by here and see what their next exhibits are.
MoreYoull get a good taste of the early 1900s as you tour the grounds of the steel barons home. Theres a fascinating cars and carriages, ask how the headlights work. Theres an art museum with items collected by Helen Clay Frick. And then theres the Clayton, the Frick home. Parking and admission are free.
MoreThe Frick Estate is definitely worth a full day visit. With the museum, the carriage house, the gardens and the Frick House to tour and see the wonderful paintings and the beautiful carriages that the family has collected you can get the full experience of the history of this family and an era in time called the Gilded Age where the econonmy, government, technology and the social customs of America were going through modern transformations. After touring the estate you can end your tour with a wonderful meal at The Cafe at the Frick where you can enjoy delicous food, prepared from scratch, for lunch during the week, a lovely dinner on Friday evenings, or take part in an Afternoon Tea on the weekends. It really is a well rounded experience for people of all ages.
MoreUnusual/rare exhibits taking place multiple times a year. Weve enjoyed the history of the high heel, the history of undergarments and the recent monet, manet, digas installments. Across the street is frick park, a great spot for a picnic or a stroll before or art the museum.
MoreWe visited for the first time ever to see the Isabelle de Borchgrave xzibit and it was fantastic. The museum staff was friendly and helpful it is clean and it was well worth our time to visit this exhibit. We will return again very soon. Parking can be a little iffy when its very crowded. I would highly recommend and this is obviously a treasure in Pittsburgh that has been untapped by me and my family but that all changed yesterday.
MoreFantastic little museum... there is alot to look at this place is a great place to spend an afternoon. There is even a resturant. You really should check this place out... did I mention the museum and the garden and everything is free... you can park at the park and walka round the park and wonder through the museum and the garden and green house make sure to check out all the old cars they are beautiful.I am not sure how popular this place is with the locals because it wasnt crowded at all it was nice and spacious and you had lots of time to enjoy everything. And there is a little gift shop of you feel compelled to spend some money on something lol
MoreWe always enjoy the Frick! They have rotating exhibits every 6 months or so. We really enjoyed the paper dress exhibit.
MoreFun at the Frick!! Having just moved to Pittsburgh, my wife and I were excited to check out the Cafe at the Frick and it did not disappoint. The weather was good so we decided on brunch al fresco. The food was bangin! upscale service and great prices. Sitting outside was perfect with our 1 year old. I would recommend without hesitation and I will be re-visiting soon. The grounds and the car museum were also worth the trip.
MoreHad a great experience talking to one of the gallery guides in the car and carriage musrum, very engaging. Loved walking around the beautiful campus while covered in snow. The visitor center and gift shop was a lovely and cozy space. Will definitely be back to wander the free sections again.
MoreSo much history to be told but the most unfriendly tour guide this time around. New facilities are amazing. Carriage museum is amazing for anyone interested in early transportation.
MoreBeautiful place, stunning pieces and nice variety. I was disappointed to some extent because art museum was really small and I didnt expect that. But its great for a short trip and it got a beautiful selection of flowers and park next to it is nice.
MoreBeautiful setting, originally a private estate, now open to the public. The art museum is free, other than any special exhibition. The grounds, conservatory and carriage museum are also free and are well kept. There is a small charge to tour the Frick Mansion. Well worth the price, especially if you tour the rest of the property. There is a cafe and a gift shop on site. Parking is also free and they are open year round.
MoreThe Frick is an amazing complex incorporating an art museum, carriage and car museum, historic house museum, gift shop, cafe, and garden. During sumner, the Frick remains open late and hosts live entertainment and special treats. The Frick is a must-visit cultural attraction.
MoreHad a wonderful day at The Frick! The museums are free of charge except for the tour of Clayton House, which was $12/person when we went. I highly recommend the art museum; I was charmed and entranced by many of the pieces displayed there. The house tour was well-curated by the docent, and shows off this last of the mansions on Pittsburghs Millionaires Row thats still intact, but be prepared to take all your photographs outside and leave larger bags in your car or in the lockers they provide in the visitors center, as photography is not allowed in the house. Also be sure to eat at The Cafe at The Frick; I had their Bird Burger (blend of ground chicken, turkey, and duckand found it to be sublime. They also have a nice selection of cocktails and wines; I enjoyed a Pomegranate Fizz champagne cocktail.
