The BEST roast I’ve ever had in over 3 years in Australia. (And a contender for some of the best roasts I’ve probably ever had!Vik is an exceptional cook, serving generous portions, and she and the whole team provide the most wonderful service. You can’t go without sampling one of the delicious Zonte wines too!A gem in Adelaide that I am so glad to have found! You can really tell, and feel, you’re in a place full of love. I couldn’t imagine not having The General in my life now and cannot wait for all our future visits!

The General is a hidden gem!! We are absolutely blown away with the whole experience!! Vik and the team are always so very friendly and welcoming, it’s like a home from home!!We love Vik’s English passion about food and get so excited to see the menus.The roasts are amazing, everything is so very fresh and delicious.We just enjoyed a special gammon lunch which was fantastic, can’t recommend The General enough.Would give 10 stars if we could.

Wow!! Absolutely fabulous lunch here today. Lovely staff and atmosphere. Vikki so friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend, the food was sooo tasty. We will without doubt be back. Can’t wait.

Awesome food and Awesome staff

Since moving to South Australia from UK our family struggled to find home comforts.. until we found Vikki and all the team at The General. The roasts are outstanding, cooked to perfection every time with the best cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire puds. All fresh produce made the right way ! 😊As soon as you walk in you feel like your having lunch with family. 5 + stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This place is amazing.Sunday Roasts English style with great Aussie wine.A generous serve of Roast beef with all the trimmings 2 large Yorkshire puddings followed by Apple crumble made with Zonte wine.10/10

Had the Sunday Roast and Vikkis Choc bread and butter pudding.The Sunday roast was excellent with all the trimmings and proper Yorkshire puddings with plenty of veg and roast potatoes the beef just melted in your mouth perfectly cooked and Vikkis twist on the Choc bread and butter pudding was delicious.The staff were really friendly and helpful, I will definitely come back here again without a doubt highly recommended, thank you Vikki and staff for an enjoyable Sunday afternoon on my birthday.

We had the most amazing time for my wife’s birthday.Vikki was so accomodating and everyone who came was so impressed with not only the venue and the service, but also the Sunday Roast with all the trimmings.The food was delicious and there was plenty of Yorkies ; )We will definitely be coming back and will be recommending.

Lovely wine bar, went in with a group of 11 on the 12/3 for a wine tasting and they were very accommodating.Staff were so nice and manager is so bubbly and friendly.They even gave me a free wine tasting for my birthday which was so lovely!

Need another star so we can rate it 6 stars! Excellent service and food was top notch. Youll struggle to find a main + dessert and a glass of wine this cheap. Well worth the drive.

Just dropped in for a drink, and have to say what a fabulous atmosphere, great staff and awesome wine selection! What more can you ask for! A must visit if your heading to McLaren Vale. Victoria was an amazing host super friendly and welcoming, our Expresso Martini’s were just what we needed. Will definitely be back!!

Visited on a Saturday night for the chefs set menu. An exceptionally tasty and enjoyable experience, in a very relaxed atmosphere. Lovely venue and friendly staff. Great value too - were from Adelaide and if this menu was served up here it would be twice the cost. Highly recommended if visiting McLaren Vale. The locals are lucky to have a gem like this.

Quaint building, tasty wines for a visit. We go back for the Sunday lunches with 10 vegetables, all the trimmings and lovely service.

I had high hopes for The General (now that theyve changed things up to have a proper menu), being the only eatery in our local area. I was not disappointed! The food was ridiculously good, the kind of quality you expect from a high-end restaurant - so fresh and tasty. Lovely staff, great atmosphere and very reasonably priced food and drinks, it felt fancy yet totally unpretentious. Bonus points for being super vegetarian-friendly. Highly recommend :)

This place was truly amazing. We had the best experience here. The service was incredible. We found it to be a very friendly place and was very informitive about the wines. A newly renovated cellar door that is a must visit. Wines were amazing too.

Great food and service

Plenty of energy has gone into The General and the vibe is very local produce, the dining room and tasting bar are operated by very experienced passionate producers of wine and food cooked to match. We attended a cooking class and were looked after impeccably well with entree- home made pasta and confit cooked duck on the menu just to begin. Matched to International award winning wine by Ben the experience was absolutely immersive and highly recommend.Getting there takes a good plan if you like more than a glass of wine with dinner but well worth it.

Pleasant venue although road noise was occasionally loud.Food good as were the wines.We dont normally like the preset menus because its not our choice.Well presented and we could not finish it all.Waiter was very professional and attentive.

5/5 for sure! Very very good food, wine and service, and a warm homely atmosphere! Staff were very friendly and clearly knowledgeable about the food and wine they were serving. Id describe the restaurant as relaxed, casual 5 star eating. I felt the value was good for the quality of food and the service, and highly recommend a visit here!

I like the idea of a place where you go and sit down and get fed whatever is on for the day but I found the food quality to be underwhelming for the price tag ~$45 per person +sides +drinks + dessert. When we went for lunch, we had baked fish which was quite dry and Poussin which was very salty. The atmosphere was lovely and the wine was excellent. Its hard to say whether the food is regularly this standard or if we went at an off time (sat afternoon).
