The SandCastle Motel in Sussex County

The motel is such a great location, 2 easy blocks to the boardwalk. The staff were nice, the cleaning people found a phone charger we had left there when we left and they put the charger in a bag with our room number in case we came back for it, which we did. The rooms were adequate, the bed was pretty comfy. The pool, however, was really not clean, you could not see the bottom, yuck. The elevator was pretty bad too. Overall a decent place to stay for a night or two.

A friend brought me to the SandCastle Motel since they had a great experience in the 1980s. However, the SandCastle needs a upgrade its facility. The room ceiling has either popcorn or drop ceilings. See pictures. Its TV guide did directly not allow me to choose a network from the guide. Definitely an 80s style TV software. Its powder blue paint choice & painted stencils are an 80s throwback.The peeling paint showed the pandemic impacted maintenance. The double beds are very uncomfortable. They felt like we slept on plywood boards. Also, there was only 1 end table squeezed between 2 double beds. In 2021, bedside electronics overwhelmed the small & solitary end table. The in room fridge froze our milk & ice tea. The cloudy pool water showed that the filter cleaned to be changed or more expensive pool repairs. When I asked for the WiFi passcode, the front person told that it was on my room keys. Nowhere on the room key nor its envelope contained the WiFi passcode. Yes, she did give me the passcode. However, there is a broken link in customer service. On the patio, the patio chairs are too short for the patio table. I have addressed "easy fixes" for the SandCastle management to fix. Honestly, I will not return to SandCastle. Please consider another place to stay.

Do NOT STAY HERE!! Front desk staff and the manager was highly disrespectful! They THOUGHT they hung up the phone with us and decided to use profound language against us regarding the pricing we have seen on THEIR WEBSITE!! The hotel needs a big update as well! For sure will spend my money elsewhere from now on!!! Thank you for making that decision easy for us! READ ALL OF THE REVIEWS!!!!

The people were really nice and its in a great location. The facilities, inside and out, are in need of renovation and repair ASAP. Overall, not too bad.

Better than a Super 8, but still have tarps for blankets. Employees were friendly and accommodating, but the amenities are put of date.

I booked a room for 2 nights it looked great on pics spacious clean and modern for the most part. It turned out to be the complete opposite very small dirty moldy no microwave light fixtures not working entrance and bathroom doors jamming up, balcony tiny and sliding doors wouldnt seal hearing excessive noise stains on beds and sheets curtains as well floors full of grime. I spoke with staff and they didnt even try to accommodate me to something better which tells me all other rooms were the same. Paid over $400.00 for 2 nights left the next morning only because of being from PA. Otherwise I would have left same day. Too dirty and depressing to stay.

I will never be staying here EVER EVER EVER again the WORST customer service EVER! The general manager was so nasty. My stay was from Saturday night until Monday morning. I paid Saturday night in the amount of 354.00 with a debit card ….when I got there Saturday afternoon I extended my room for another night paying 240 for Sunday night In cash. They went and charged my card without permission for the second night after I told them I was paying in cash at the counter they took my 240 and charged my card 60 so I should of paid the remainder balance of 180… they general manager said well you’ll have to wait when I look at the records because I don’t have any records of you paying cash for the second night… I told her to look at the camera and she can see for herself… basically her attitude was I’ll look when I’m damn good and ready.. so nasty and ignorant..

The staff were very welcoming when checking into this motel. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. The room was a decent size, it could probably use a deeper cleaning. More specifically, there was hair under the sheets and some in the shower. I did not sleep under the sheets, however, my sister did and said the sheets were very comfortable. The room had everything we needed. It had a mini fridge, tv, and free wifi. The pool was actually super cute and so was the deck. When we checked out the next day, the front desk lady said we could park at the motel until 3 which I thought was super nice. Overall, you are getting your money’s worth… but I wouldn’t stay here if you want a room that is spotless.

I would have rated this higher if my check-in experience wasnt so terrible. There are stains all over the carpets in the hallway. Our room wasnt as clean as I would have liked, but as far as motels go, its pretty comparable and its location was awesome. However, the check in left me feeling pretty angry. We tried to park in the 6 garage but b/c of bikes on top of our van, we couldnt make it. Upon realizing this we immediately backed up and parked in front of the hotel until we could figure out if there was somewhere else we could park. Nothing was damaged. The owner even came out and looked to make sure. (He later helped us park in the upper garage where there was more clearance. He was very kind.When I then entered the front office, a surly woman didnt greet me, just said "You see we have pipes in the garage, right?" I replied, "Yes, thats why we backed up and parked out front." She just nods, so I proceed to say who I was and I was there to check in. She doesnt even look at me, just says, "Someone will be with you in a moment." Then she proceeded to grill the front desk employee who attempted to check me in about some numbers. The woman working the front desk did her best to treat me with kindness and make the check in a good experience. But while she was finally allowed to check me in, the surly woman proceeded to get salty with a man on the phone who she had to refund. I ran a front desk at a busy time share resort in N. Myrtle Beach, if I or any of my employees would have treated a guest, or another employee the way this woman did, she wouldnt be working for me. I got the feeling she was management, maybe owners wife/co-owner. Maybe bc she runs a beat down motel she feels the people who work there or stay there are beneath her, but no amount of make-up or nice clothes could make that woman pretty. Stay there if you want to be close to the boardwalk, but be prepared for surly woman to make you feel like the scum that stuck to the carpets of her motel.

Perhaps two stars is generous, but what you see is what you get. An average place to sleep, period. While staff interactions were pleasant, they will go above and beyond to protect the property and bottom line. If you want a motel close to the beach, this might be your place. If you want quiet, good value and maybe some flexibility, keep looking.

Very outdated place, forgot to take pics while their. Floors peeling up, Toilet stained and chipped. Evaluator broke with there also. Was cheaper than other places and had a room. But for the prices vs accommodation was still over priced. Entire place needs to be renovated, They should have done this in 2020.

Great location, and solid hotel for the price.Yes, the property is old and could use a facelift. But I found it clean enough, and the staff friendly and helpful. The location is also perfect, and right on the main drag.Pools is nice, and the sundeck overlooks the Main Street in town.The bar on the 1st floor is one of the best spots in Rehoboth, but it does stay loud later into the night so if you are one of the boring people who go to bed at 9 PM you might be bothered by the noise. I loved having the hopping spot so close.

Absolutely amazing! Even with the bar and live music downstairs you get a restful night sleep. Beds are clean and comfortable and the room is clean. We stayed here for our honeymoon and was able to extend our stay with the help of the lady working behind the desk (6/15/21 at 2pm!we will definitely be staying here again.

This motel is located in the center of Rehoboth Beach. Its a shame to Rehoboth. It should be razed to the ground and rebuilt. I paid $300 for one night at this filthy, mouldy room with smell like ashtray. Vintage matrasses and blankets from Ronald Reagans time is a good addition to the original carpet still keeping foot prints of first tenants, since it was never cleaned properly. For example, walking on asphalt outside of the motel with barefoot, your feet will be much cleaner, since asphalt has more chance to get washed by rain. You must be blind or drunk to come and stay there again. To turn on and off the light you need to screw in and out the light bulb - very safe and convenient. Also you better remove trash from previous tenants, its a part of your stay duty. Public restroom at 7-11 will look much cleaner than here. And dont forget, there is no coffee machine inside. What a shame.

The room was very simple n clean. The location was great!! There were shops all around n just one block away from the boardwalk. Great place to stay, if you dont plan on staying in the room much

Do not be fooled by a decent price so close to the beach. It was dingy and dirty. Stayed in room 207. The beds were just a mattress with springs and not very comfortable. I didnt lay down on them because the room seemed so dirty. My daughter went in to take a shower and one of the towels had a massive stain on it. (SO GROSS!The lights didnt work and the phone didnt work either.

Barbara is unprofessional and rude and hung up while I was still talking. Said we had until September 3rd to cancel. Kept $275 from the room hold even though we were canceling in the appropriate time we were told. They do not send confirmation emails or cancellation policy. Hotel looks dirty and ran very poorly.

I like to start with something positive staff was super friendly ... other than that nothing but negative rooms were completely disgusting when my family arrived hair in the tub clearly was not cleaned at all blood or what appeared to be blood on the mattress pulled the sheets back to find what looked to be mustache or beard hair freshly shaven looking all over the one bed and dirty sheets on the other . Bath tub when I tried to clean it didn’t fill up .

The only good thing about this is the closeness to the beach and decent pool. They are seriously lacking on maintenance all over, I only thought to get these pics in our room. The pool was nice that it was indoors and the patio area was nice. I just wish you could access the deck area after 10, even though the pool closed at 10. The room seemed like it also needed a good deep cleaning and they need to replace stained box springs. The TV in the room just seemed too small for the room, could of used one a little bigger to see easier while laying down. It is nice they have a parking garage, but it can be challenging to navigate due to its size, especially with a minivan or larger SUV. I would look at other places nearby and only stay here in an emergency.

Upon arrival the motel seemed ran down and old. We were definitely not impressed...but we were only staying one night and decided to tough it out UNTIL we found a bed bug...we killed the bug and I took a picture and left the bug in the room as proof (knowing a place like this might try to blame the customerBOY WAS I RIGHT! We immediately packed our things and went to check out. I kindly told the employee at the front desk and she said “that’s not possible”...I said “okay” and showed her the picture. She asked me to send her the picture and called the owner. Ultimately they said they have to “investigate” the situation!!! She followed with “how do we know you didn’t bring the bed bugs” AS IF I WOULD DRIVE 5 hours home at 9:30pm and throw everything we brought with us a way for fun?! I have NEVER written a review or spoke with a manager but I have also never experienced such poor service. I’ve never seen a buisness blame the customer, then not allow the customer to talk to anyone else but them. We asked for the managers or owners number multiple times and the employee said that’s “not policy”. NEVER AGAIN.

The hotel needs to be throughly cleaned and updated! No maid service so you get to empty your trash and walk on sandy carpet. You also have the pleasure of trying to find someone in housekeeping so you can ask for toilet paper and towels every day. My husband and I stayed here for 4 days. Not what I expected from the internet pics it was very deceiving and looked so much nicer. It was very disappointing 😞 to say the least.

It wasnt anything fancy. However, it wasnt far from the beach (about an 8 minute walkand the staff was friendly and welcoming. The room was nice enough, 2 beds and everything youd expect a motel to have. My room kinda stank of cigarettes even though there are no smoking signs posted in every room

Do Not Stay Here!!!#1 We had to pay in FULL 2 weeks prior to us even coming here.From the beginning, the room looked clean up until we went into the shower. As we turned the showers on, leaks appeared on the ceiling. It dripped from the time we turned the shower on, too until. We should have paid attention to the ceilings and the shower head is BAD.In addition, there is no WiFi. The receptionist did not supply us with an open brochure nor told us anything about our stay. They more so took in more personal information from us, then giving us information.Please do not stay here with the Grace of God!!!

Extremely disappointed, the only positive was the location. The property was filthy. Upon our arrival we found 4 dead cockroach’s in our room and bathroom. The comforters on the beds are so old and dirty, they look like they have never been washed. The carpeting in the room makes your feet and socks black because it is so dirty. The bathroom is old and nasty. The toilet sits so low to the ground. The bathtub doesn’t drain properly so you end up showering standing in 4-5 inches of dirty water. The swimming pool water was slimy, no circulation at all. For the amount of money the owner is charging per night you’d think they would do some renovations.

The location was great, 2 blocks from the beach and boardwalk. Most of the staff was friendly. That is all the positives. The rooms were beyond dated. The pillows were rock hard. When additional pillows were requested and brought up, they were equally as hard. The sheets were paper thin. The bathroom was filled with mold on the ceiling and on the shower hooks. The shower curtain was broken and falling off. The towels were dirty. Again, the staff was nice enough to try to fix the problems, but this place just needs to be gutted and completely renovated. For $300 a night I expected a bit more, even for a beach town.

Interactions with staff was pleasant, but main issue is that the house keeping staff did not change the sheets from the previous occupants. Beds were made, but upon further inspection there were 5 strands of hair in one bed, and 3 in the other. Absolutely disgusting! We asked for new sheets, there was not one hair in them, which only confirms the fact that they did not change the sheets. At least bathrooms were clean.

Very disappointed. Office staff seemed disorganized. Rooms are a C-, at BEST. The facility is in need of a CV complete renovation. Fixtures outdated, pool area is crummy. The only bright spot was the 2nd floor patio. We chilled out there, twice and seen about 4 people....probably because the place is a dump. Save your money and book a room at the Sands!

I love the Sandcastle. The location for the price is fantastic! Only 2 blocks from the ocean and literally in the middle of everything downtown. In addition, the staff is friendly and helpful and the deck outside the pool is a great place to hang out and people watch.So, why only 3 stars? To be honest, it is in need of repairs and updates. In our room, as well as the couple with whom we were traveling, the metal ring around shower handle was no longer attached to the wall and turning the shower both on and off was difficult. We werent entirely sure we were going to be able to turn it off. The carpet either needs to be shampooed or replaced, as there were unremovable items on it. I believe the cleaning staff does the best they can with what theyre working with.We will stay there again because of the great location, price, and friendly service, but sincerely hope they make some much needed updates to this Rehoboth Beach icon.

Overall we had a good experience. It is a typical beach motel. Close enough to the beach to walk, friendly staff, cold air conditioning in the room and warm water in the shower. It isnt fancy, it is what it is. I always strip the beds when I get into these motels to check everything out and there wasnt a single sign of a bed bug or roach behind any picture frames, etc. The bedding was clean but not very soft, we bring our own blankets so it was fine. Some of the tiles in the ceiling were lifted or sagging but no water damage of mold. The balcony was nice, my son enjoyed playing with his trucks on it. The elevator door did open slowly but it worked and we were fine. We dont reccomend the pool, we jokingly called it cherno-pool because it was full of so much chlorine it felt like we were getting chemical burns on our legs when we caved and got in with our son. The room that the pool is in also feels like it might be the scene for a horror movie, definitely wouldnt reccomend it.If you are looking for an affordable place with clean bed and warm shower that is close to the beach, this is your place.

Definitely a bit rundown, but good to lay your head between long days at the beach. The indoor pool is nice. Very limited service - no breakfast and they wont make the beds if there are any personal items on them. Warning: Getting out of the parking garage is a nightmare even in a smaller vehicle!! But all things considered, its a good place to stay if you just want to rest between adventures. And the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Avoid this motel! The location is great but the motel is super run down and filthy! When we first got to level 3, where our room was, the smell of some chemical was overwhelming. The smell in our room was even worse! It was so strong it was hard to breathe. I suffer from headaches and a smell like this would eventually make me sick.It smelled like eucalyptus/chemical bug spray to me. I ask the front desk for another room and I checked the other room and it had the same smell. There was black mold in the ceiling of our room. The ceiling was dripping in a few spots. We had roaches in the bathroom at night. I did check for bed bugs around mattresses and luckily didnt see even evidence of them. It was one of those places that you wore shoes to get to the bathroom, if a pillow landed on the floor it was forever tainted and had to stay there. The halls and carpets were dark and dirty. The elevator takes a very long time and so we opted to take the stairs and they were so covered in bird poop it was hard to find a clean spot to step. There was a creepy man that I believe is an employee (I read other reviews complaining about the smoking guy holding open the doorthat stood holding the front door open who was vaping and the smoke was blowing indoors. I watched him for a bit hoping hed be considerate and stop smoking considering I was with 2 toddlers but he didnt so eventually I had to ask him to move so that our children could pass through. I will not stay at this roach motel again. I would rather spend my $200 a night someplace else next time and not have to worry about bringing some critters home with me.

This was a very nice hotel. We stayed here for 3 nights and were very happy with it. The location was excellent. Maybe a 10 minute walk to the ocean. All the shops are right around the hotel. The indoor pool was very nice and clean at the hotel as well. My only complaint was the parking garage. We have a truck and it got extremely tight and hard to move around. We even watched cars struggle.

Its a motel so was not expecting much. Hard mattresses, could not get hot water from bathroom sink. Instant hot water from shower. Pool looked inviting, but did not use. Rooms were clean. Staff was friendly and efficient.

Perfect location and friendly staff but the hotel is super dirty, there was a huge line of pinky mold on shower curtain and the toilet bowl. I asked if they can clean it but it was so deep that they couldnt make a tiny change! The pool was also super dirty. The water was absolutely green and moldy that we didnt dare put our feet in it! But the worse was the beds, they were too small and uncomfortable. It was a total defeat. Not satisfied at all.

I’ve been here a total of three times this summer and my stay has always been great, especially for the price and close location to Rehoboth Beach. I accidentally left my gold chain behind during my last stay this summer. I’ve had this necklace since I was four years old! While thinking the worst; I decided to call them and have them take a look and Fran took five minutes to find it and sent it back herself and even paid for the postage. 🙏🏼 Forever grateful. Love this motel. Thanks so much guys! The entire staff is extremely warm hearted and I will always come back.

My husband and I had a lovely stay here. The staff are very helpful and kind and they room was very clean. It also has a lovely roof top with a indoor pool you can relax at. They have a nice sized parking lot which is covered so your car is safe from the elements. The location is also ideal since you can walk to the beach and lots of lovely restraints and cafes. I would say this place is much more like a hotel then motel. We will be back.

I realize that this past week is rain everyday. However this place needs a lot of work. Buckets in hallway catching water. Sat by the in door pool and kept moving chair closer to pool. Water was dripping from the ceiling. The carpet in our room was tamp to your feet. Room was clean and plenty towels. However water was a little brown. We have been going to Rehoboth for 42 years. This hotel needs really over all updates.PS. People were friendly.

Just friendly and clean. Front desk was clear, professional, and helpful with information. The rooms were airy and quiet. Nice indoor pool on second floor opening out to a spacious terraced seating area. It was kind friendly and served as a nice weekend getaway.

This is a very clean motel that has the idea of simplicity at its core. Rooms are nice and you have all that you need. From the balcony on second floor, street side you can see the ocean and boardwalk. It is so close to downtown and all the shops and restaurants. The price is great and staff friendly.

My wife had stayed here years ago and talked about it often. When we decided to book it for this past summer, with our 4 children, it was based on what she remembered of it. We were not impressed, though. We were set in a two-bed room, which was what we wanted. However, it was dirty. There was food under beds, and something staining the curtains. The balcony door didnt close all the way, which let in all sorts of sound and dust. The stopper was missing from both the sink and tub, which meant we wouldnt have been able to give our kids baths at all while there. It was just one thing after another. We didnt last one night in our room. I talked to the person at the front desk that night. While she couldnt give us a refund (not a manager), she was able to move us to the end of the hall, in a family room. 4 beds, and everything in place. Granted, it was still dirty, and she was apologetic that there was food on the floor of THAT room, as well.Tight parking spaces, and a meh experience.. The only thing saving it was the friendliness of the front desk staff that night. It was great being able to walk to the beach each day, though..

I do not recommend this place for your vacation!I stayed at the Sand Castle Motel with my family the last week of August and was very disappointed with the lack of hospitality received during our stay. Going on vacation, you expect to have a mostly easygoing time but this wasnt the case at the Sand Castle Motel. Once we checked in and arrived to our room, I noticed our air conditioner did not work at all and the room was poorly lit due to two of the four lights being burnt out. These are things that should be evaluated prior to guest arrival. I went to the front desk and notified the manager and she assigned us to another room on the same floor. When we arrived to room 207, everything was in working order but there were dirty towels lying on the bathroom floor from the previous guest and the floor wasnt vacuumed. We stayed there for four days, three nights. During this time my family and I were hoping to utilize the pool. It was VERY dirty and we heard several other guests make complaints about its upkeep. Again, highly disappointed with the accommodations we were receiving and the stay was becoming rather stressful. The night before checking out it rained... my aunt had her belongings near the sliding glass door to the balcony. Nobody expects to have their clothing soaked in rain water while the door is completely shut. This happened to her bag of clean clothing and the carpeting in close proximity to door was also wet. This should not be happening! Not to mention thats how mold occurs! Once again, we contacted management about this particular issue and all she said was, "yes, that happens sometimes when it rains". My family and I were excited to stay at the Sand Castle because of its covenient location but in the future I will not be recommending this place due to our stressful experience and poor accommodations.

We got the chance to stay an extra night at the beach so we booked one night at the SandCastle. We walked into the building at 11 AM when we were told it would be ready for us. We were greeted with 90°F temperature and the smell of garbage. We got in the elevator with our luggage cart that was missing one wheel and went to 3 floors that werent ours, slowly, before getting to our floor. We got to our room which was recently cleaned and had bugs in the door which was left wide open before we got there. The air conditioner was off in our room and the ajoined room with the rest of our family so it was very hot and smelled of mildew. There was no water pressure or hot water. In the end we immediately checked out and went to a nice hotel down the street. Avoid this place in the busy summer months.

The location is great for walking down to the beach and visiting every shop along the way. Its not too far for walking the way to dogfish either. The rooms are pretty standard and my interactions with staff were friendly. Only complaint is a lack of microwaves in the rooms, which is pretty big for me.

Very basic beach motel on Rehoboth Avenue, close to everything. Rooms are small, generally clean, and a bit outdated and rundown. However they are fine for an overnight stay. The pool was dirty. Mold was visible in the clogged floor drains and tiles were slimy and slippery. Just walking from the pool to the chairs my kids each slipped and fell several times. Would not recommend staying here for the pool. It was kind of gross. Location is great and central. If you just need a room to crash after a day at the beach or whatever, this would be a decent option. The pool aside I would do an overnight here again.

All working in the office were pleasant and friendly. Quickly found my booking (3rd party siteand had everything organized and ready to go 2 hours before check in! Rooms were clean and comfortable. Location was very nice, a quick 5 minute walk to the beach, right near great bike to go rental shop and near a bakery as well.

Weekend getaway with my kids we got room 313. I walked in the floor was dirty. The fridge had spilled soda in it the toilet seat was loose. My kids 3 and 2 months were warm. I flip up the tab on the ac unit to turn the air on, and when i did there was a roach inside. This was a last minute trip so I couldnt switch hotels. I went down stairs the lady at the front desk she apologize for it and was deeply embarrassed gave me a new room on first floor. Which was extremely clean and much better.

This is a beach motel, so you get what you get. They are super nice at check in. Maid service is so-so. The place has about the average cleanliness of a beach motel. The price used to be stellar in the off-season, but has gone up recently. The location is outstanding. I continue to come here year after year, so I guess theyre doing something right!

Room was clean, nice & quiet! (You can easily fit a third bedbathroom was clean, housekeeping left an envelope so that you can put tips in it (optionalabout 5 mnts away from the beach gives you a chance to see all the stores around the motel. Lady at the front desk was extremely nice she let me check in 2 hours before my check in time "3pm" . Will definitely come back! 😊

It was a very rough night. Bed was very uncomfortable and the air conditioner was loud. Tried turning it off and opening the door but the traffic was just as loud. The noise did help from hearing the person in the next room snore and cough. You could not see out the patio doors because the seal broke and there was moisture between the panes of glass.If you are going to have a hospitality business then time needs to be spent on improvements, maintenance and definitely comfort. Im giving an extra star because the staff was friendly.

The staff was very friendly and allowed us to keep our car parked in the garage for a few hours before check in and a couple hours after so we could enjoy the beach a little more. The hotel was definitely outdated though. The rooms were small but comfortable as long as you dont spend your vacation in the room.
